HCS Business Solutions, in association with Waterford, Clonmel and Carlow Chambers of Commerce, will host a series of free lunchtime seminars throughout February and March.

The seminars entitled “The practical applications of the Cloud - is your business ready?” is aimed at business owners and managers.

With ever changing developments in the IT sector, businesses are now moving towards cloud computing and the premise of these seminars is to demystify cloud computing and highlight how best it can work for local businesses.

Neil Phelan, Director of HCS Business Solutions said that the inevitability of cloud computing will mean that businesses will need to be prepared for the transition to the cloud.

“Technology has moved on so quickly. We moved from mainframe computing in the 70’s, to PC’s in the 80’s, the Internet and .com era of the 90’s and noughties, and now leveraging on the internet era the cloud is set up to take a big leap over the next decade.”

He added “That’s why adapting to developments in cloud technology enables companies to have greater data security, more flexibility in terms of functionality, easier and more reliable service along with notable cost saving benefits. Particularly in today’s tough trading climate, anything that positively impacts on productivity and reduces downtime is a real benefit for any business.”

The seminars will address questions such as “The Cloud and your business – are you ready?” and deal with the issue of how cloud computing can make business better. There will also be a demonstration of Microsoft Cloud Services.

These free events will take place in Waterford Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, February 15^th; Clonmel Chamber of Commerce (Clonmel Park Hotel) on Thursday, February 23^rd and County Carlow Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, March 7^th.

Dunmore East Golf Classic celebrates 20 years of great golf!

Home Instead Senior Care and Flahavan’s work together to “set seniors up for life”

The South East Solas Centre looks back on a great 2011!

The journey of the Solas Centre began almost four years ago. What started as an ambitious project to provide the best level of cancer services to the people of the South East is now a reality.

Back in 2008, the South East Cancer Foundation outlined the need to expand support services to cancer patients in the region. Each year across Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny 2000 people are diagnosed with cancer. In 2011 alone cancer support was provided to 500 patients from the South East Cancer Foundation’s small house in Sealy Terrace in Earlscourt and subsequently from the new Solas Centre. The Solas Centre anticipates that it will be able to provide support to 1,000 patients in 2012.

2011 proved to be a very busy and productive year for the South Eastern Cancer Foundation.

In January, while the Solas Centre was nearing completion the final touches to make it a state of the art facility were being put in place.

February was all about fit-out. Everything from phone systems and furniture, massage couches and art rooms were fitted in the South East Cancer Foundations soon to be new home. There were green areas to be landscaped and new volunteers to be recruited and trained. February 28^th was moving day as the centre relocated to its new home from Sealy Close – a truly momentous and emotional day for all who had given so much of their time and energies.

By early March the new Centre was already experiencing a huge increase in people using their services. The Centre, along with Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Nicky Fewer Memorial Sailing Scholarship Fund, was a grateful beneficiary of proceeds from Cllr. Mary Roche’s Mayors Ball.

In April, the Centre having opened just six weeks earlier was providing support to more than double the number of clients availing of their services. By the end of the month 60 new clients had visited the Solas Centre.

On May 14th, the Solas Centre officially opened its doors to fundraisers and volunteers. All those who had given so generously of their time and assistance were invited to see and experience the new facilities that were at the disposal of cancer patients and their families.

Iain Munro, SECF Chairman, said “The Solas Centre would not be here if it wasn’t for the generosity and good will of the people of the south east. Since April 2008, we have been campaigning to build and fund state of the art cancer support centre that offers excellent services to cancer patients and their families. Frankly, none of this would have been achieved if it wasn’t for the groundswell of support and kindness from the people of Waterford and the South East.”

June brought some much anticipated sunshine and the Solas Centre’s first newsletter. Distributed to over 3,000 fundraisers and supporters of the Centre, the publication highlighted the experience of three people who were in some way affected by cancer. The stories were recalled by Joe Simpson, who was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour in 2008, Brian Fanning with testicular cancer in 2007 and June Earl, who cared for her father Jimmy McGrath (R.I.P.), who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer four years ago.

In July, Republic of Ireland and Wolves star Stephen Hunt dropped in to the Solas Centre to launch the South East Run for Life. With sponsorship cards available from the Solas Centre, Sam McCauley stores and AIB branches throughout the region to encourage 1,000 runners, joggers and walkers to take part, Stephen was delighted to announce details of the event. “It is great to be involved with such a good cause that helps so many people through out the South East”, Stephen said. It was also an excuse to have a kick about with Adam O’Neill, a nephew of a Solas Centre patient.

The Hogs were out in force in August for the “Boobs ‘n’ Balls” Bike Trip. Conceived and organised by Waterford Harley Davidson and encompassing Celtic Thunder HOG, Harley Davidson Club of Ireland and the Freewheelers MC, the “Boobs ‘n’ Balls Trip raised a staggering €23,145 for the Solas Centre. A convey of hundreds of motorcycles left Athlone for Waterford and the public support was phenomenal! There was also some much publicised encouragement from Today FM’s Phil Cawley, former Irish rugby hooker Shane Byrne, travel writer and actor Charley Boorman and stunt riding sensation Mattie Griffin.

September was another busy month for fundraising. The fantastic Roanmore GAA Blitz took place during the month followed closely by the Vintage Tractor Rally and the Mooncoin Vintage Club Family Day – three wonderful, fun-filled and entertaining fundraising initiatives!

The sun shone in October and so did the 1,708 runners, joggers and walkers who took part in the South East Run for Life! The increased numbers that participated, the increased money raised for the South East Cancer Foundation and the all new Fun for Life event at the People’s Park in Waterford City on Sunday, October 16^thmade the fourth Run for Life its best ever.

The amount raised also exceeded all projections and eclipsed previous year’s totals. With over €264,000 for The Solas Centre this amazing event was an even bigger success than ever imagined.

In November things moved up a gear as the Carrick on Suir Motor Rally Sprint got pulses racing! That month also saw the launch of the Autumn Art programme, in association with Waterford Healing Arts Trust, for people affected by cancer. Under the tutelage of artist Philip Cullen, this therapeutic programme continues to provide participants with the opportunity to explore their creative sides! The workshops include colour mixing, magical landscape creation, patterns on canvas and “the mystery bag”, which involves feeling textured objects in a bag and describing what emotions the object evokes.

December sees The Solas Centre continually expanding its counselling and therapy services. Along with new programmes for groups including stress management and yoga, a new support programme for men were also introduced.

Home Instead Senior Care urges family and friends to help seniors through the cold weather

The Christmas period allows us to spend more time with our family and friends. With more free time available to us over the holiday season, Home Instead Senior Care is advising family and friends to keep an eye out for tell tale signs that our elderly parents or relatives need more help.

Danette Connolly, Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care, Waterford said “Over the holiday season we tend to spend more time with our parents, grandparents or senior relatives so it is a good opportunity to make sure that are looking after themselves properly, have sufficient food and heat and are safe in their homes.”

Ms. Connolly advised that there are warning signs to look out for that signal an ageing parent or relative needs more help at home.

· Do they seem to be eating well or is food spoiling in the fridge?

· Have they stopped doing daily grooming rituals like taking a shower or fixing their hair?

· Are they taking the right medications in the right doses at the right times?

· Does their car have new scratches or dents?

· Is mail or newspapers piling up without being read?

· Are they using furniture, towel bars or shower curtains to pull themselves up to stand?

“If you are visiting a senior relative during the Christmas holidays be aware of things that may be changing for your senior relatives. Be ready to spot the signs, have those tough conversations and help them get the support they need to remain happy and safe in their own home as long as possible.” Ms. Connolly added.

A nationwide event founded in Waterford, the 14th Waterford Rotary Christmas Memorial Tree is launched

An idea conceived in Waterford has now raised over €1 Million for charities in Ireland.

In 1998 the first Christmas Memorial Tree appeal was established by the Rotary Club of Waterford to help raise funds for the development of a 20 bed Hospice facility on the grounds of Waterford Regional Hospital. To date the initiative has raised nearly €400,000 towards this worthy cause.

Following the success of the Waterford initiative, in 2002 the Rotary Club of Cork & Bishopstown became the second club to establish a Christmas Memorial Tree appeal. They were closely followed by the Cork Douglas and Clonmel Rotary clubs and then subsequently by Tralee and Wicklow. Since then the number of clubs across the island adopting the Christmas Memorial Tree format has steadily risen. In 2010 the number of clubs adopting the Christmas Memorial Tree appeal topped 25!

And now the initiative has taken an international development with the Rotary club of Cirencester in Gloucestershire in England launching its first memorial tree this year. Waterford’s Mike Kelliher assisted the English club with their plans.

This year EBS Waterford is the sponsor of the Memorial Tree Appeal. As well as raising much needed funds in Waterford for the Hospice Foundation, the Memorial Tree Appeal provides people with a means of remembering their loved ones in a dignified and meaningful manner. Indeed over the years the Christmas Memorial Tree Appeal has become synonymous with the celebration of Christmas in Waterford and enjoys widespread support from the public.

Ms. Kathleen Fitzgerald President of the Rotary Club of Waterford said, “The Rotary Club of Waterford is so proud to be the founder of this excellent initiative that has done so much good over so many years. In saying that it is the generosity of the public that makes it such a success.”

The launch took place at 1pm on Thursday December 8^th at John Robert’s Square in Waterford City. With carols from Waterford Youth Gospel Choir, the Memorial Tree Appeal was officially launched by His Worship the Mayor Cllr. Pat Hayes.

Waterford and the country have changed significantly since the inception of the Christmas Memorial Tree in 1998. However, despite the fact purse strings are tighter now than they have been in years the Rotary Club of Waterford is confident it can continue to raise money for Waterford Hospice through the Memorial Christmas Tree for many years to come.

Jobseekers will travel abroad to find work….but plan to return

Hartley People Recruitment and Training recently conducted a survey amongst its candidates across the South East region to uncover their views on future jobs prospects. The survey revealed that the majority of respondents are prepared to travel abroad to find work, whilst those unwilling to do so are staying in Ireland mainly due to family and financial commitments.

The results of the survey revealed that almost 6 out of every 10 respondents are prepared to relocate outside of Ireland for the right role, whilst the remainder do not feel that relocation is a viable option for them. Of the respondents that indicated they would relocate, improved job and career prospects, salary incentives and better tax conditions were cited as the primary reasons for relocation.

The country of choice for these respondents is Australia / New Zealand (30%), 20% are prepared to travel anywhere to find work, 19% cited the UK as their country of choice, followed closely by the USA with 14%.

According to Roisin Hartley, Director of Hartley People, the survey was carried out to get a true “on the ground” picture of jobseekers views. “Initially when we analysed the results it did paint a pretty bleak picture about the ‘brain drain effect’ as so many are prepared to travel abroad to gain employment or to enhance their careers”.

“The trend indicates that those who are unable to relocate due to commitments, both family and financial, are slightly older than those who are prepared to travel abroad” said Ms. Hartley.

Ms. Hartley added, “However, on the flip side, it is reassuring that 60% intend to return home within three years. The fact that these jobseekers plan to return home re-skilled, up-skilled and prepared to contribute to the Irish economy may be a key factor in driving future growth in Ireland.”

“We must remain focused on job creation in this country. Ireland has a smart, well educated population, primed and ready to work. Over half of the respondents in our survey are graduates and although many plan to leave, crucially, they intend to return. There are jobs abroad for those who are prepared to travel, so the government needs to remain focused on job creation ensuring this talented and skilled workforce return and assist in rebuilding the Irish economy” said Ms. Hartley.

Three local businesses received accolades from Waterford City Enterprise Board last week as they picked up Best Business Awards at a reception in the Mayors Office.

The three companies, South Eastern Tyre Recycling Centre, DessertFirst and Marla.ie were presented with specially commissioned Irish Handmade Glass Trophies and the overall winner, Marla.ie, received a Waterford Crystal Perpetual Trophy.

The premise of the awards is to recognise excellence in SME’s and the

Mayor of Waterford Cllr. Pat Hayes along with Chairperson of Waterford City Enterprise Board, Bertie Rogers, praised the innovative ideas and dedication of the winners, adding that they have done so much to contribute to the local economy.

South East Tyre Recycling Centre Ltd. was a recipient of the Best Business Award. Established 18 months ago by Brian Bambury, the company recycles old and end of life tyres which are then converted into rubber chips for equine use. The rubber chips are used by horse trainers to improve racing performance and reduce training injuries. Although Brian was out of the country and unable to collect his award in person, he did comment that he was delighted with the award and the assistance he and his company has received from Waterford City Enterprise Board.

Another recipient of the Best Business Award was Margaret Fleming’s Dessert First. Ferrybank woman Margaret Fleming established the dessert and baked goods business in March 2010. In those short 18 months Margaret has gone from producing everything in her own kitchen to employing five full time and two part-time employees.

The winner of the Best Overall Business Enterprise Award was visual communications agency Márla.ie. Established in 2004, Sheila Gallogly joined Marla.ie in 2006 and has grown the company to service an expansive list of national clients including Neven Maguire, Superquinn, Sunshine Juice and The Irish Exporters amongst others.

According to Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO of Waterford City Enterprise Board, the annual awards recognise innovation, dedication and commitment to building a successful enterprise. He added “Waterford City Enterprise Board is privileged to work with a host of start up and established businesses that have the focus and vision to generate ideas, to grow their business, to create jobs and to contribute to the local economy.”

Waterford Enterprise Board was established in October 1993 by the then Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and to provide direct grant-support to new and existing enterprises and promote entrepreneurship. Through a wide range of programmes including clinics, courses, enterprise development assistance and funding Waterford City Enterprise Board has assisted 24 start ups this year alone.

Solas Centre expands support services to cancer patients in the South East

The Solas Centre, the South East’s cancer support service, is expanding its portfolio of services to cancer patients and their families in the South East.

Whilst the journey for the Solas Centre began in 2008, in 2010 support was provided to 250 patients from the South Eastern Cancer Foundation’s small house in Earlscourt. With 2,000 people diagnosed with cancer across Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny, the state-of-the-art Solas Centre provided support for over 500 cancer patients in 2011 and anticipates that it will be able to provide support services, such as counselling, relaxation therapies and group support services to over 1,000 people affected by cancer in 2012.

According to Iain Munro, Chairman South Eastern Cancer Foundation, every effort is being made to ensure that the best cancer support services are provided across the region.

“Cancer affects us all and with more and more people being diagnosed with cancer each year, we are working hard to ensure the Solas Centre has a range of the best possible support services for cancer patients and their families.”

“We couldn’t have done this without the phenomenal generosity of the people of Waterford and the South East. The monies raised from a host of events such as the South East Run For Life, the Boobs ‘n’ Balls Bike Ride, the Vintage Tractor rally and so many more group and individual donations will allow us to provide further services that will enable cancer patients to receive the optimum support”, Mr. Munro added.

One such initiative recently launched is the Centre’s Art programme for people affected by cancer. This therapeutic programme, under the tutelage of artist Philip Cullen, provides participants with the opportunity to explore their creative sides. With a focus on nature, people, textures, landscapes and colour the programme aims to create an evocative and relaxed atmosphere that heightens the senses.

The Solas Centre has also expanded its counselling and therapy services and has introduced new programmes for groups including stress management, yoga, and a new support programme for men.

The philosophy of the Solas Centre is manifold; to provide cancer patients and their families with a safe place to talk things over and to help them cope with living with cancer. It also will work closely with the hospitals of the region in promoting and supporting patient-focused, cutting-edge cancer research and continues not only to educate people about cancer prevention, but also to change our mindset around cancer.

Rotary Club of Waterford presents an evening with the award winning Dungarvan chef Paul Flynn of the Tannery Restaurant and local MasterChef winner Mary Carney, returning to Waterford publicly for the first time since winning the inaugural MasterChef Ireland on RTE. This exciting event will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday November 30^th at the Tourism and Leisure Building WIT, Cork Road.

Mary Carney grew up in Waterford City as the youngest in a family of five children and food has always been a huge part of her life. Her mother ensured that the kitchen was where everyone wanted to be. She involved the entire family in the preparation of meals so cooking has always been second nature to her. Of course Mary’s family has a long tradition in the food industry in Waterford, her grandmother being a Flahavan of Kilmacthomas.

Mary spent her college years in Dublin and it was there that she met her husband Mike - a fellow Waterford man - who shared her passion for food.

Then, this year she entered MasterChef Ireland and had the great fortune of winning the title. After winning she decided to pursue a career in the food industry full time.

Paul Flynn, renowned chef is proprietor of the Tannery Restaurant. The Tannery Restaurant is located in Dungarvan and has long been regarded as one of Ireland's leading restaurants. In 2005 the boutique style Tannery Townhouse was also opened and just a few years later the Tannery Cookery School featuring a state of the art demonstration kitchen with further adjacent guest accommodation was added to Paul and Maire Flynn’s culinary offering.

Paul Flynn is regarded as one of the foremost Irish chefs, cooking exciting and modern Irish food. The Tannery Cookery School reflects his cooking ethos with cookery courses for everyone from the amateur home cook to the more adventurous cook and even those who might want to cook for a living.

Solicitor fights for school’s sight loss campaign

In 1982 Sinead Kane was born in Youghal, Co. Cork with just five per cent vision and was registered as blind. However this was one obstacle that didn’t stop her from qualifying as Ireland’s first visually impaired solicitor in 2009.

Ms. Kane explained, “I was told by eye doctors that I would be totally blind by the time I would be 23 years old. I am 29 years old now so I am six years overdue. My childhood was a battle against adversity because I was constantly fighting the system to get appropriate needs and supports.”

Most of her life has been about triumph over adversity and fighting for what she believes. Now she has turned her attention and positive attitude to the cause of Fight for Sight and in particular its recent project; the production and distribution of an educational film called “Wally’s lucky day”.

In June 1984 Fight for Sight was founded in Waterford by Ophthalmologist Mr. Paddy Condon for the purpose of prevention of sight loss.

Following the occurrence of several serious industrial accidents in the South East of Ireland in the early 80’s involving, in particular, a number of young people losing their sight Mr. Condon decided that through education and resources many of these incidents could be prevented.

Since its establishment the Fight for Sight has raised more than €2 million through continuous fundraising programs and donations.

In 2010 Fight for Sight started plans to produce a film based upon the potential dangers for sight loss in everyday life for teenagers. Acclaimed and award winning playwright and director Jim Nolan was asked to write and direct the film.

Following the assistance of a number of groups including the talent of local teenage actors Wally’s Lucky Day was completed in spring 2011.

Wally’s Lucky Day is a thirty minute fictional film designed to encourage eye safety awareness amongst its target audience of young teenagers.

Wally is sixteen, he’s got a cold sore and he’s in love with the lovely Louise. Viewers are asked to join him on his lucky day; a day when despite the combined efforts of breakfast rolls, city traffic, scratch cards, welding machines, his cousin Ray and his mates Tom and Joe, absolutely nothing goes wrong. Then you see a few people who weren’t so lucky.

The film shows how simple daily activities can be dangerous for ones eyes. It is hard hitting and quite graphic towards the end of the film, but needs to be in order to make an impact on today’s teenage viewer. It is an original way of communicating to this age group and both Fight for Sight and Sinead Kane think is worth assisting.

Fight for Sight’s aim is to distribute this film to every secondary school in Ireland and is currently looking for sponsorship in order to assist with this plan.

Following Ms. Kane’s decision to help Fight for Sight she has learned that her connection with the charity goes back many years.

“My mother recently told me that Mr. Condon saw my grandmother back in the late 1970s and operated on her eyes. Also around that time he saw my mother and treated her eyes. When he realised that my mother had glaucoma he ordered that she get all her brothers and sisters down to Waterford straight away to be checked for Glaucoma.

In 1980 my mother gave birth to my sister Aisling. My mother was so impressed by Mr. Condon’s caring nature that she brought my sister at 6 weeks old to see him. I was born just before the Fight for Sight charity was set up and as a baby my mother also brought me to Mr. Condon.

The wheel seems to be coming full circle. Mr Condon has assisted generations of my family and now its time I assisted him and do whatever I can for his charity.”

Wally’s Lucky Day was officially premiered and launched at the Greyfriars Gallery in Waterford City on Thursday November 10th 2011. It is Fight for Sight’s plan to distribute the film to every secondary school in the country in the New Year.

Waterford City Enterprise Board recently launched a series of Networking Lunch events that address the pertinent and real issues affecting businesses in today’s tough economic climate.

The first of these lunchtime seminars took place last week and the topic was “Raising Bank Finance” with Mr. Freddie Hatton of FP Consulting. Never before has the issue of bank funding been more outstanding. In August the Central Bank in Ireland announced that the pillar banks cannot lend over €3 billion in Microfinance loans to small business because of the quality of applications and a lack of demand.

With banks no longer responding positively to applications for funding from SME’s this has left many small businesses unable to secure much needed capital.

The premise of this inaugural lunchtime presentation was to offer attendees a better understanding of the change in banking policy, the revised criterion in banking, how best to position funding requests and the kind of supporting documentation that is required from the banks. Following on from this, there will be a series of one day workshops on November 9^th and December 7^th.

According to Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO of Waterford City Enterprise Board, the event proved hugely enlightening for those in attendance. “The Waterford City Enterprise Board has fashioned an agenda of lunchtime events that are pertinent and, in many cases, critical to SME’s today. Over the course of the next few months we will be offering people in business, at all stages, the opportunity to gain some practical advice and a comprehensive insight into the areas that are affecting them.”

South East Run for Life a regional success for the Solas Centre!

What a day! The Solas Centre couldn’t have asked for a better day for its South East Run for Life. The increased numbers that participated, the increased money raised for the South East Cancer Foundation and the all new Fun for Life event at the People’s Park in Waterford City on Sunday, October 16^thall made the fourth Run for Life its best ever.

And the weather helped too!

With a growth of over 700 participants on the previous year, 1708 runners, joggers and walkers lined the streets of Waterford in this year’s luminous orange South East Run for Life t-shirts. At one stage in the afternoon four miles of these orange shirts snaked around Waterford’s ring road providing a magnificent sight.

The 2011 race was much more of a regional event. Over 40% of the participants hailed from outside Waterford County. This year’s regional focus was a conscious decision on the part of the organisers. Since the Solas Centre offers its services to a regional audience Beat 102 103 came on board to promote this year’s race to the five counties of the South East. One runner even came all the way from Wales!

The monies raised this year also exceeded all projections and eclipsed previous year’s totals. With over €264,000 raised for The Solas Centre this important event was an even bigger success than ever imagined. In fact in the days and weeks since the race the positive feedback to the Solas Centre has been overwhelming.

Iain Munro, SECF Chairman was delighted with the day, “I am so pleased with the tremendous response this year. The money raised will help expand the Solas Centre’s services through out the South East. One of this year’s goals is to develop our relationship with cancer support groups throughout the five counties. I cannot thank the runners enough for giving up their time to participate in the South East Run for Life 2011.

Our plans for the coming months include broadening our service base, adding to the facilities we provide our clients and increasing our staff to serve them. We need to be constantly creative in the way we support cancer patients and the funds generously donated will allow us to support new programmes. Thanks to the generosity of the people of the South East new services can be introduced in 2012.” Mr. Munro added.

The Solas Centre was built entirely from community fundraising and the generosity of the people of the South East, over €1.5million was raised over three years. It moved from its original premises in a small estate house in Waterford to its new state of the art facility in Ardkeen, which is now regarded as one of the finest cancer support facilities in the country today.

Waterford's enterprising initiatives in food and drink

Waterford Enterprise Board has long been an advocate of building small business enterprises in Waterford city. Through a wide range of programmes including clinics, courses, enterprise development assistance and funding Waterford City Enterprise Board has assisted 24 start ups this year alone.

With the success of the recent Harvest Food Festival Waterfordians could be forgiven for regarding Waterford as the new up and coming “foodie” capital of Ireland. The importance of producing and supplying high quality artisan food and beverages is recognised by Waterford City Enterprise Board, and as such has recently launched its Ideas in Food initiative.

The concept behind Ideas in Food is to encourage and assist individuals with a viable idea for the food industry. Two such examples of enterprising food and beverage producers that Waterford City Enterprise Board has worked with are Granny Maddocks Pantry and Metalman Brewing.

Granny Maddocks Pantry is the brainchild of Mary Doherty. The business named after Mary’s great grandmother Bridget Maddocks produces fresh gluten and wheat free cakes that look and taste like regular cakes. Mary became aware of the potential for the business as many of her friends and family were on gluten free diets and were restricted in their choice of cakes and pastries. All the baking is done in a total flour free environment and baked to order. Mary has plans to expand the range to savoury items in the future.

Another enterprise which has received assistance from Waterford City Enterprise Board is Metalman Brewing, a microbrewery currently under construction in Waterford city. Metalman Brewing was borne out of a love of beer but frustration at the lack of availability of authentic Irish beer.

Gráinne Walsh and Tim Barber produced their first beer, Metalman Pale Ale in March 2011. This beer was launched in both Waterford and Dublin and has been very well received.

"It's still work in progress, but we're finally getting there", says Gráinne Walsh. "We've had a lot of support from different people along the way, including Waterford City Enterprise Board, who are helping us with financing some of the brewery equipment we need.”

According to Mr. Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO, Waterford City Enterprise Board, Waterford has experienced a groundswell of interest in producing high quality, artisan food and drink.

“So far in 2011 the Waterford City Enterprise Board has assisted food producers with Measure 1 grants, which provides funding for equipment and production. We have also recently launched the Enterprising Food Network, which has 13 members. This network assists food producers and now restaurants and horticulture projects, in areas such as packaging, branding, route to market, distribution, marketing and business advice.”

“The Ideas in Food initiative gives those who are thinking of moving into or who are already in the food sector a sounding board for their ideas and concerns. The assistance ranges from advice and mentoring to product development and financial assistance.”

He added “Waterford has received some tough blows on the jobs front, but bit by bit these enterprising individuals collectively can give Waterford the boost it deserves.”

HCS Business Solutions recently hosted a cloud computing seminar which highlighted the way forward for local businesses. The seminar aimed at business owners and managers was entitled “The New Way to implement IT solutions using the Cloud”.

Neil Phelan, Director of HCS Business Solutions highlighted the cost saving implications of cloud services for small business, whilst Microsoft solution architects demonstrated in real time the accessibility and functionality of cloud based IT systems including Microsoft Office 365 and CRM 2011.

Major developments in the IT sector have been well documented and technologies are now moving towards “the cloud”. Thus HCS hosted this seminar in an attempt to demystify cloud computing and highlight how it can work for local businesses.

According to Mr. Phelan the way forward is inevitably the implementation of cloud based services. “Homes and businesses are becoming more and more dependent on technology. However there are still many obstacles or failure points in the way of being truly connected. Particularly in today’s tough trading climate anything that negatively impacts on productivity and leads to downtime is a real concern for any business.”

There was also a demonstration of Microsoft Office 365 by Microsoft solution architects Mark Mulvany and Dave Northey. This is not the first time that HCS Business Solutions has highlighted the massive impact of the cloud. By observing some simple yet effective guidelines it will ensure that all our little monsters will have a ghoulishly safe Halloween!

1. Set out specific neighborhood boundaries to your children when they go trick-or-treating and ensure they know where they can and can’t trick or treat!

2. Don’t allow children to go trick-or-treating alone. Always accompany your younger children and ensure older children trick or treat in groups of three or four.

3. Remind children to keep to well lit pathways and be cautious when crossing the road.

4 Use a flashlight or add reflective strips to costumes and shoes so drivers can see children at night.

5. Never ever enter stranger’s homes or vehicles.

6. Tell children to go only to homes and neighbors they know and only to houses with lights on.

7. Don’t allow your children to cut through back alleys and fields. Make sure they know to stay in populated places and don't go off the beaten track.

8. Check that your child’s Halloween goodie bag has not been tampered with. For this reason children should not eat their trick or treat bounty until they get home.

9. Make sure costumes fit properly and don’t trail on the ground. Tripping and falling is one of the main causes of injury on Halloween.

10. Beware of Pets. Even dogs that are in costume and out walking with their families may not be friendly to strangers.

Geraldine Grant was announced as the overall winner of the national Home Instead Senior Care’s CAREGiver of the Year at a glittering awards ceremony in Dublin’s Gibson Hotel.

The national awards recognise the work of Home Instead Senior Care’s CAREGivers and acknowledge their dedication and commitment to providing the best care for seniors.

Since working with Home Instead Geraldine has provided care to over 30 clients in Waterford and South Kilkenny and beat off stiff competition from Home Instead’s 17 other franchise finalists.

According to the judging panel the criteria for the awards were quite rigorous and the finalists had to show evidence that caring is a passion and not just a job, as well as demonstrating circumstances where they went above and beyond the call of duty to provide the best client care. Another criterion was the ability to show that the CAREGiver helped the client to reach and maintain independence.

Geraldine, who was delighted to receive the award, impressed the judges with her sense of humour, her ability to empathise with clients, the natural ability to develop warm relationships with her clients and their families and her dedication to her job.

In fact her dedication to her job was particularly evident during last winter’s challenging weather conditions. Geraldine attended all of her visits in the areas of South Kilkenny and not one of her clients was without her care over the winter months.

The Fun for Life Day takes place on Sunday, October 16^th in the People’s Park, Waterford. It’s guaranteed to be a jam-packed family fun day and all for a great cause, the South East Cancer Foundation.

There’ll be bouncy castles, a mega slide, the Wobbly Circus will be there along with a farmer’s market, a “superhero and princess” fancy dress competition and the People’s Park will also be home to the finish line of the Solas Centre South East Run for Life.

The Fun for Life is the family-centric part of the day, as the Solas Centre South East Run for Life gets under way that day at the Clock Tower at 12 noon. Thousands of runners, walkers and joggers are expected to complete the 10 mile course and finish in the People’s Park.

According to Barry Monaghan, Run for Life Committee Chair, the Fun for Life Day was created to ensure the participants in the South East Run for Life, their families and friends can all enjoy a great day for a great cause.

“We are hoping to match last year’s number of one thousand runners and walkers to take part in the South East Run for Life. These participants will come from all over the South East, so we want to ensure that their families and friends are well looked after and entertained while the runners undertake the more taxing 10 mile run.”

However, Mr. Monaghan added that the Fun for Life Day is for everyone and wants to encourage as many people to come along and enjoy the teeming fun line up.

All across Ireland, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is organising local walks through its network of volunteers and you’re invited too. So bring along your friends, family and dogs to get active and walk for them in your community.

This Saturday, October 8th in the People’s Park, the Rotary Club of Waterford is helping this vital charity with its efforts and calling all dog owners to join in by taking their dog for a walk between 2pm and 4pm. There is no sponsorship card required, just register at the event for €5 to get your reflective bands.

These reflective bands are a great safety accessory, especially during the autumn/winter months when days are getting shorter and darker. Ensure your family's safety by wearing them on your wrists or ankles.

Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is asking communities all over Ireland to participate in their first ever nationwide Family Dog Walk at 3pm on Saturday October 8th. Backed by soccer legend Roy Keane and RTE 2fm DJ Hector O’ hEochagain, the organisation hopes to raise €250,000 for those who are visually impaired and families of children with autism.

Ballybeg’s Community Garden destined to be a perennial favourite!

Despite the downpours there was a large turnout for the official opening of the Ballybeg Community Garden and Artery Landscape, Design and Garden Centre.

The Community Garden and Centre was officially opened by the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Pat Hayes in the presence of Waterford City Manager, Michael Walsh.

The project, which is the brainchild of the hardworking voluntary committee of Ballybeg CDP under the auspices of Project Manager, Liz Riches, came to fruition after first been proposed in 2008. In a community that has a higher than average rate of unemployment, it was felt that a project of this nature, would give local people practical skills to support them in their move towards employment or further education.

As a result of hard work, vision and dedication the Ballybeg Community Garden and Artery Landscape, Design and Garden Centre has become an integral part of community life in Ballybeg.

Within the Community Garden over 30 small plots have been developed and are tended by groups of friends, families and children. Open and accessible, The Community Garden has become a social space, a place to learn and share and a place that provides organic fruit and vegetables to many families in Ballybeg.

Within the Community Garden you’ll also find The Artery Garden, a not-for-profit community enterprise which specialises in selling plants and providing advice and support to growers. Landscaping and design services are offered as well as short courses in organic growing for teachers, crèche workers and individuals wanting to learn more about growing their own.

According to Liz Riches, Project Manager of Ballybeg CDP, the final result has been amazing. “The Community Gardens were borne out of the dedication, generosity and energy of the local community. What was unsightly waste ground lying idle beside the Parish Centre is now a vibrant, colourful community garden that belongs to the community and is for their benefit.”

“We have been lucky to receive phenomenal support from local businesses and government agencies, and of course, Waterford City Council, and in particular the City Manager, Michael Walsh, who donated the land to us.”

Not content to rest on their laurels, the CDP has plans to further develop the Community Gardens. “We have seen the positivity and pride that the gardens have contributed to the community, and we really hope to develop further projects of this nature so that every resident of the community can become involved and help contribute to the enhancement of Ballybeg.”

The Ballybeg Community Garden is open seven days a week and The Artery Landscape, Design and Garden Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4pm and Fridays from 10am to 1pm at present.

Sienna, Waterford’s only retailer in Irish Top 30

Sienna Home Furnishings is Waterford’s only representative at the prestigious Sunday Independent Retail Excellence Ireland Awards for 2011.

Established 13 years ago by industry group, Retail Excellence Ireland, this Award scheme is the only one of its kind in the country, rewarding excellence across the entire breadth and depth of the retail industry and not just one particular sector.

R.E.I. rated over 400 Irish retailers across more than 50 criteria; standard of exterior, use of windows, footfall management, service levels, and numerous further tests were carried out including a thorough mystery shop. After this the top 100 were selected for a further rigorous store assessment. From those, the Top 30 were selected to attend the Sunday Independent Retail Excellence Ireland Awards ceremony later this year.

Sienna Home Furnishings qualified as Waterford’s only finalist, and is placed in the ‘Best Extra large Store’ category.

The award process is based on a thorough store review conducted by a fully trained assessor, which is subsequently assessed by a panel of 10 independent judges who ultimately select the final winners in each category

In fact this is no ‘once off’ event for Sienna. After only two years in business they were named among the top 25 retailers for 2007, they featured again in 2008 and 2010.

Following the store review, the assessor described Sienna as a “leader” in the home furnishings sector. Sienna supplies a vast range of Irish and international furniture brands, highly innovative, interior designed room settings. The idea behind G4X, in hindsight, seems very simple!

Create one of Europe’s first competitive online gaming websites where gamers can compete against one another for cash prizes.

G4X Gaming Ltd is the brain child of Waterford native and tech engineer/ IT consultant, Richard Anderson. The idea came to him four years ago, for a user friendly online gaming site where gamers could compete with each other anywhere in the world.

Today G4X is recognised as one of Europe’s fastest growing gaming sites with almost 400 members.

Richard approached Waterford City Enterprise Board in 2011 with his business plan and the Enterprise Board immediately recognised the potential of the venture offering financial and marketing assistance. According to Ciaran Cullen, CEO of Waterford City Enterprise Board, G4X Gaming Ltd is the kind of business that the Enterprise Board is eager to support, “While this type of business is new to Waterford City, globally it is a growth area. It is where we see our future development and reflects our best hope for long term jobs.”

Richard spent years build up friends and contacts in order to get G4X up and running. These include Tony Gorey, the co-founder of G4X Gaming Ltd,

Ferdia O`Brien from Strawberry Interactive and Mark Flanagan.

G4X was approved for a Waterford City Enterprise Board employment grant which was crucial in setting up the company. They also based themselves in the Waterford City Enterprise Centre where Ciaran has been keeping contact with G4X to see how they are growing and giving advice when needed. Now that the company is up and running their passion has increased tenfold and they are looking for new ways to make gamers experiences better and more enjoyable.

While the majority of promotion for G4X is through social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, as a way of promoting the business and having some fun, G4X hold ‘off line’ events around the country where gamers can show up and take each other on face to face using a number of different consoles and games to maximise the gamers experience and win great prizes. G4X held their first ‘off line’ event night in Revolutions Basement Bar in Waterford city on the 2^nd of September which was a success with 210 gamers attending the event. They are also in the process of organising Ireland’s largest inter-college tournament promoting gaming lounges on campuses throughout Ireland.

The Solas Centre South East Run for Life takes place on Sunday October 16^th in Waterford City. Sponsorship cards are still available from the Solas Centre, Sam McCauley stores and AIB branches through out the region.

All runners or walkers must register prior to race day. This registration takes place at the Solas Centre in Waterford City between 11am to 6pm from Tuesday October 11^th to Saturday October 15^th.

Because the emphasis has been on the South East this year and the level of interest outside Waterford has been unprecedented, the organisers are aware that not everyone can make it to Waterford City for these registration times. That's why for the first year ever there’s postal registration.

Waterford’s Kite Design Studio takes flight!

The Kite Design Studio, a pilot project spearheaded by Waterford City Council and Waterford City Enterprise Board was officially opened by the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Pat Hayes and Artist Róisín de Buitléar.

Situated in a state of the art facility in Henrietta Street this unique design collective houses some of Waterford’s most talented designers and artists including glass blowers, glass cutters, a Master engraver, a fine art printer, two silversmiths and a contemporary Irish designer.

The project initiated by Waterford City Manager, Michael Walsh and former Chief Executive of Waterford City Enterprise Board, Bill Rafter, took almost two years to complete and was formulated to develop the Viking Triangle as a key tourism area in the city and to showcase Waterford’s long crystal making tradition.

According to Mr. Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO, Waterford City Enterprise Board, the Kite Design Studio project is the first of its kind in Ireland. “The premise of this ambitious project is to encourage, nurture, house and showcase the phenomenal craftsmanship that Waterford has to offer. All of the businesses operate as micro- enterprises and produce the highest quality design and craft pieces.”

Mr. Cullen added, “It’s hard to imagine another collective in the country that could house such talented entrepreneurs. The Kite Studio is home to independent design label Bonzie. The studio also houses Sean Egan Art Glass, renowned for its 9/11 Twin Towers Commemorative sculpture. Another enterprise is Stradbally Jewellery comprising of talented husband and wife team, Ken and Claire Coleman, who produce quality handmade silver jewellery. The Irish Handmade Glass Company is a glass blowing and cutting studio formed by four former Waterford Crystal Master craftsmen producing a range of clear and colour crystal. You’ll also find there Anne McDonnell-Murphy, a fine art printer consistently pushing the boundaries of this traditional art form.”

“It really is a case of an “embarrassment of riches” – the talent, ingenuity, craft quality and innovation coming from the Kite Design Studio are an inspiration to budding entrepreneurs, designers and craftsmen and women.”

The launch was well attended by local businesses, artists and supporters of the project and the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Pat Hayes officiated over proceedings. Mayor Hayes said “The Viking Triangle project is the embodiment of a cultural renewal initiative in the heart of Waterford City. Effectively what has been achieved here is the bringing to life of over a thousand years of history that have shaped Waterford as we know it today.”

“An integral part of this project is the Kite Design Studio which houses five amazing artists and designers. This design collective brings a unique and remarkable craftsmanship to the city. From fine printers and jewellery makers to glass engravers and silversmiths to fashion designers, the Kite Design Studio is an enviable and ambitious design centre that showcases the imagination and talent that Waterford proudly possesses.”

Also speaking at the event was Visual Artist, Róisín de Buitléar. Róisín has been working in the medium of glass as a primary material since 1983 and said the Kite Design Studio was an important facility. “Hopefully the Kite Design Studio will be the first of many such creative facilities in Waterford. It allows the public direct access to artist’s studios to engage with artists and their making process. This interchange nurtures a greater understanding of the individual craft practices, which stimulates and encourages sales and referrals.”

Ms. de Buitléar added, “Working in a craft tradition means having a respect for that tradition while embracing new ways of interpreting that tradition.”

The design studio is open to the public six days a week and visitors have the unique opportunity to experience in-house designers working on their designs in situ.

A Government-sponsored free seminar, ‘Building a Business on Your Ideas’ is taking place in the Waterford Institute of Technology, Cork Road, Waterford on Thursday 22nd September 2011.

The seminar organised by the Patents Office, is aimed at small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and start-up companies in Waterford and surrounding counties. Speakers include experts from the public and private sectors and local entrepreneurs.

Minister for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock TD said: ‘This seminar presents a great learning opportunity for small business-owners, entrepreneurs, inventors and start-up companies who want to scale their businesses or turn their ideas into functioning enterprises.

‘It is not generally known that over 80% of new inventions are derived from previous inventions, so during the seminar information will be provided as to where details of previous inventions can be sourced.

‘The seminar will outline all the government supports available from incubation to commercialisation.

‘It will examine how to convert an idea into a business opportunity, due diligence in setting up a business, an insight into what are patents, trade marks and industrial designs and how they should be managed.

‘Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and now more than ever they need every support they can to start and grow,’ Minister Sherlock concluded.

The seminar runs from 9.10am to 4.00pm and there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to the speakers throughout the day and after the seminar from 4pm to 4.30pm.

Waterford showcases Positive Solutions for Ageing!

Now officially recognised as a Positive Ageing Week City, Waterford will play host to a number of senior related activities from September 23^rd to October 1^st.

“Celebrating Positive Ageing” is the theme of this year’s Positive Ageing Week and the full programme of events was recently launched by the Mayor of Waterford Councillor Pat Hayes.

Speaking at the launch the Chair of the Committee, Babs Murphy, encouraged older people to attend the free events and to try out new activities on offer throughout the course of the week.

The “Positive Solutions for Ageing” Health Day is one such free event which takes place in the Waterford Health Park, Slievekeale Road from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, September, 27^th.

As part of the event there will be free health checks and a number of talks covering topics such as legal advice, security, mobility and citizens information. There will also be a wide range of exhibitors including Home Instead Senior Care, the Irish Heart Foundation, Lisduggan Active Retirement, Stroke Support Group and many, many more.

According to Ms. Connolly, Director of Services with Home Instead and PAW Committee member, “Currently there are over 7,500 senior citizens living in Waterford City and County. The basis of Positive Solutions for Ageing is to make as much information available to seniors and their families about many health related issues including; healthy eating, mental well being, free blood pressure and hearing tests, complimentary therapy options, personal safety and security and general advice for seniors. And all talks and presentations are free to attend.”

Jackie gets behind Solas Centre Run for Life

Jackie was diagnosed with stage 3 Advanced Breast Cancer in December 2009.

Jackie was admitted for treatment on the 14th January 2010. The Solas centre was recommended by the liaison nurse on the ward. Having cancer was terrifying but she repressed the powerful emotions and met the challenge head on with a very stoic ‘get on with it’ attitude. She would not give in to her fears and wanted to channel all her energies on getting better. One of the fears was getting into a car and driving as she had a phobia about car crashes since she was diagnosed. Because her body was so on the edge a car crash would have been too much to handle.

Her first appointment at The Solas centre was scheduled for the 1st of Feb 2010. Jackie lives 20 miles from the hospital so driving was essential but she never made this appointment as driving down the quays in Waterford a large 4x4 crashed into her. The car was written off and she was rushed to hospital in a neck brace. Luckily she was ok and a few weeks later did get to the centre in one piece.

Claire at the Solas Centre talked to Jackie and her husband and they decided Reflexology would help. The therapist Gail was able to describe the emotions they were feeling through reflexology. They found this very useful and it was a safe place for Jackie to deal with her psychological and emotional needs.

One year on Jackie has made a full recovery, feels great and no longer has the car crash phobia. She puts this down to the fantastic help that she and her husband received at the Solas Centre.

Built entirely from community fundraising and the generosity of the people of the South East, the Solas Centre was designed with ambiance and comfort in mind. There are relaxing therapy rooms and quiet comfortable sitting rooms for a confidential chat or for counselling. The art room is bright and airy and perfect for kids to splash paint or for adults to express themselves through art. The Centre’s assembly room is great for groups to meet and chat.

Iain Munro, SECF Chairman, said “The Solas Centre would not be here if it wasn’t for the generosity and goodwill of the people of the south east. Since April 2008, we have been campaigning to build and fund state of the art cancer support centre that offers excellent services to cancer patients and their families. Frankly, none of this would have been achieved if it wasn’t for the groundswell of support and kindness from the people of the South East.”

However the need for fundraising goes on. The event now in its fourth year is changing emphasis from building the Centre to maintaining quality cancer services. It is also expanding its appeal for participants not just from Waterford City but from the whole South East. Each year across Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny, 2000 people are diagnosed with cancer. While last year cancer support was provided to 250 the Solas Centre anticipates that it will be able to provide support to 1,000 patients in 2012.

Mr. Binman cleans up Waterford’s Harvest Festival

Home Instead Senior Care to put the kettle on for Waterford Hospice Movement

Home Instead Senior Care will put the kettle on and host a coffee morning to raise funds for the Waterford Hospice Movement on Thursday, September 15^th.

All of the funds raised on the morning will go towards the provision of hospice care for patients in Waterford and the South East. Waterford Hospice Movement provides palliative care services for patients with life threatening illnesses in Waterford city and county and South Kilkenny, covering a population of 120,000 people.

Home Instead Senior Care is delighted to host its fifth Hospice coffee morning. Danette Connolly, Director of Services said “As a company that supplies caring professionals to the region, we are acutely aware of the absolute necessity for a dedicated hospice facility in Waterford. The level of care provided to both the patient and the family is paramount.”

Danette added “It costs Waterford Hospice approximately €588,000 annually to provide its services. Almost two thirds of this money has to be raised through donations, local fundraising such as these coffee mornings and funds raised by individuals.”

Geraldine Grant was announced as the overall winner of Waterford’s Home Instead Senior Care’s CAREGiver of the Year awards. Geraldine will now go on to represent Waterford in the national final which will take place at the Home Instead Senior Care National convention on Saturday, 8^th October.

Geraldine has cared for over 30 Home Instead Senior Care clients and has shown great dedication and commitment to her clients.

The premise of the local competition was to recognise and reward the work of its CAREGivers. According to Danette Connolly, Director of Care, Home Instead Senior Care, “The work of the CAREGiver is invaluable and often goes unrecognised. The Waterford Harvest Festival takes place from September 3^rd to September 11^th and features a packed itinerary celebrating Waterford’s rich and diverse culinary heritage. Over 9 jam-packed days, visitors to the city and locals will be able to enjoy food markets, taste workshops, cookery demonstrations by celebrity chefs, street parties and open air picnics.

2011’s Waterford Harvest Festival will enjoy a new dimension as three of Waterford’s top restaurants have joined forces to host a Singles Restaurant Trail.

La Palma, Sabai and L’Atmosphere restaurants have compiled this fun frivolous food trail that combines flavoursome food, an inviting atmosphere, exciting company and perhaps the opportunity to find love!

The Singles Restaurant Trail takes place at 7pm on Wednesday, September 7^th and will entail a tour of the three award winning restaurants.

The idea is the brainchild of Sabai proprietor, Catherine Heffernan who said,

“Obviously the focus over the Harvest Festival will be on high quality locally- produced food. This year we plan to introduce a food-focused fun evening. The Singles Restaurant Trail will combine some of the best produce in the South East, in three of Waterford’s favourite restaurants and give single men and women the chance to enjoy all of these elements and perhaps meet somebody special on the night.”

“It’s going to be quite an intimate evening and we are hoping to find twelve single men and twelve single women who will book the trail. In fact we have no shortage of single women signing up for the trail. The men, however, need a little more persuading.”

Catherine added, “It’s going to be a really great evening, full of good fun, company and of course, food. Three groups of eight will meet a guide at their allocated restaurant to start their culinary tour where they will be treated to a different course in each restaurant. At the end of the night the groups will meet up at Sabai Restaurant where there will be live music, and, who knows, love may blossom amongst some of the participants.”

Deirdre Molloy, Waterford Harvest Festival Manager added “The Waterford Harvest Festival has earned the reputation of one of the most eclectic food festivals in the country with a culinary schedule that has something for everyone, not just for foodies.”

Stephen Hunt and Jim Power supporting the Solas Centre Run for Life

Jim Power lives in Ard Na Greine in Waterford City and is an ardent supporter of the Solas Centre. This is following the “enormous” help the Solas Centre gave him when he was diagnosed with cancer. At first Jim coped by himself and kept up a front but soon found that this was not working and contacted the Solas Centre.

There he could let down his guard and open up to people. As he entered the Centre and was greeted at reception he says he broke down, “She sat me down and got me a cup of tea and put her arms around me like a mother.” Jim availed of counselling and reflexology at the Solas Centre and believes that this service was invaluable in helping him deal with his illness.

“I can only say that I love this place because I feel secure here. The fright is gone when I come here. I can take off my hat here and I don’t even do that in the pub”.

Jim still uses the Solas Centre and says that he is “indebted” to everyone there.

About the Run for Life 2011:

With the Run for Life 2011 we are calling for 1,000 people from all over the South East to take up the challenge to support 1,000 people affected by cancer, in the South East Run For Life 2011 on 16^th October. That’s one runner or walker supporting one person each!

17th Guinness International Bluegrass Festival line – up gets better and better!

The Guinness International Bluegrass Festival is delighted to announce two more acts to the line up of what is regarded as Ireland’s largest free Bluegrass Festival.

Taking place in the picturesque fishing village of Dunmore East, Co. Waterford from August 25^th to August 28^th the Dunmore East festival is bringing together an enviable line up of bluegrass artists.

Two more acts that have just confirmed their appearance at the festival are Well Enough Alone and Hanway & Murray.

Well Enough Alone is a Dublin based four piece bluegrass band. Known for the energy and rawness they bring to traditional and contemporary bluegrass, Well Enough Alone delivers a mix of original songs to classics to hot instrumentals.
The band consists of Hugh Taggart on guitar and lead vocals with Martin McWhorter on mandolin and tenor vocals. Ben Goodbody plays bass and baritone vocals, while Conor Daly lends his talents on the five-string banjo.

Another much anticipated addition to the line-up is Hanway & Murray. When New York banjoist, Tom Hanway, was jamming in a hotel lobby with guitarist Kieran Murray from Belfast, their talent was immediately recognised by an RTE radio producer. That was a significant moment as Hanway & Murray was officially formed and since then the duo has featured often on national radio.

Murray is regarded as a “genius tunesmith” who can churn out one amazing song after another, while Hanway is one of the most ferocious and versatile banjo players on the planet. They share lead and harmony duties and cover a vast musical terrain, mixing popular and original songs with soaring instrumentals.

Tom Hanway is no stranger to the Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival having jammed in previous years with Galway three piece Molly Hicks and The Jack Grace Band, aka The Martini Cowboy. In 2005, Hanway won the European Bluegrass Music Association’s “European Bluegrass Band of the Year” award as a member of the Bluegrass Ravens.

Home Instead Senior Care searches for Waterford’s CAREGiver of the Year

Home Instead Senior Care is looking for Waterford’s CAREGiver of the Year, who will go on to represent Waterford in the national final. The winner will be announced at the Home Instead Senior Care National convention on Saturday, 8^th October.

Since Home Instead Senior Care opened its doors in Waterford in early 2009, it has brought a new level of homecare and companionship to clients in Waterford and the South East.

The premise of the local and subsequent national competition is to recognise and reward the work of its CAREGivers. According to Danette Connolly, Director of Care, Home Instead Senior Care, “The work of the CAREGiver is invaluable and often goes unrecognised. Home Instead Senior Care views these awards as an opportunity to realise and value the work of our CAREGivers. In many cases the CAREGiver is simply there; there to be a friend and companion, there to help with mundane day to day tasks and there to allow our clients to enjoy a much better quality of life in their own home.”

The criteria for the awards includes showing evidence that caring is a passion and not just a job, that the CAREGiver is prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty, that the CAREGiver has helped the client to reach and maintain independence and that the CAREGiver has adhered to the stringent Home Instead Senior Care and HSE procedures and regulations.

Ms. Connolly added “We have been working with a wonderful panel of independent adjudicators including The Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Pat Hayes, well known Waterford Hospice Chairwoman, Marie Cummins and Barbara Murphy, Director of Nursing at St. Patrick’s Hospital.”

“The feedback from the panel was pretty unanimous; all of the carers nominated have shown an amazing amount of compassion, energy, responsibility and pride in their work and have forged some genuine friendships with their clients.”

Rotary Club of Waterford welcomes its first female president

It’s all change at the top as Kathleen Fitzgerald takes up the reigns as president of Waterford Rotary club.

Kathleen was welcomed as the new president of Rotary Club of Waterford on Friday July 8^th by outgoing President Derek O’Byrne.

Kathleen has been a Rotarian for six years and her commitment to the club has earned the respect of fellow members who were only too pleased to vote her in as their new president for the forthcoming year.

Kathleen said: “I am delighted to become the president of Waterford Rotary Club, It’s going to be a very exciting year. This year, we are planning to continue the great annual activities the club in Waterford is known for while introducing some new ideas. I am looking forward to meeting and working with local groups and really getting people involved with Rotary. There is so much to do and enjoy.”

Kathleen Fitzgerald is a well known business woman and director of Georges Court Shopping Centre in the city centre, along with a number of other business interests. She is also a Past President of Waterford Chamber. Kathleen has two children (Bill and Lisa) who are keeping the family tradition going as they are also in business in the city.

After 16 years, almost 1,000 gigs, 150 bands and artists and a whole heap of hoopin’, hollerin’, pickin’ and clawin’, the 17^th Guinness International Bluegrass Festival is returning to the picturesque fishing village of Dunmore East, Co. Waterford.

The line-up has been announced for the festival which takes place from August 25^th to August 28^th and in 2011 the Dunmore East festival is bringing together an enviable line up of bluegrass artists for Ireland’s largest free bluegrass music festival.

The famous local hostelries; the Strand Inn, The Haven Hotel, The Spinnaker, The Ocean Hotel, Powers Bar and Azzurro, will play host to over 50 free gigs throughout the weekend with local and national bands playing a variety of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music.

Solas Centre launches the 2011 South East Run for Life… The Next Step

The Solas Centre, the South East’s cancer support service, is calling on all runners, joggers and walkers to get in shape for the Solas Centre South East Run for Life which takes place on Sunday October 16^th in Waterford City. Sponsorship cards are available from the Solas Centre, Sam McCauley stores and AIB branches through out the region.

The organisers are hoping 1,000 people take part in support of the 1,000 who will avail of the Solas Centre in 2012.

The Republic of Ireland and Wolves star Stephen Hunt was delighted to launch the 2011 event, “It is great to be involved with such a good cause that helps so many people through out the South East”.

The Solas Centre, which last year moved from its premises in a small estate house in Waterford to its new state of the art facility in Ardkeen, is now regarded as one of the finest cancer support facilities in the country today.

Built entirely from community fundraising and the generosity of the people of the South East, over €1.5million was raised over three years. The building was designed with ambiance and comfort in mind. There are relaxing therapy rooms and quiet comfortable sitting rooms for a confidential chat or for counselling. The art room is bright and airy and perfect for kids to splash paint or for adults to express themselves through art. The Centre’s assembly room is great for groups to meet and chat.

Iain Munro, SECF Chairman, said “The Solas Centre would not be here if it wasn’t for the generosity and goodwill of the people of the south east. Since April 2008, we have been campaigning to build and fund state of the art cancer support centre that offers excellent services to cancer patients and their families. Frankly, none of this would have been achieved if it wasn’t for the groundswell of support and kindness from the people of the South East.”

“Today the people of the South East can be proud in the knowledge that it is due to their support. Every single cent towards the design, build and running costs came from the endeavours of the Centre’s supporters.”

Each year across Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny, 2000 people are diagnosed with cancer. While last year cancer support was provided to 250 the Solas Centre anticipates that it will be able to provide support to 1,000 patients in 2012.

In order to provide the best support services to these cancer patients and their families fundraising continues to be crucial. Iain Munro added “Unfortunately, we can’t afford to rest on our laurels. The need to continue fundraising to support cancer patients is paramount. The 2011 South East Run for Life is a great event that not only supports the work of the Solas Centre but is a great opportunity to get fit and have some fun.”

Local crystal designer presents 9/11 sculpture to American Ambassador

This week the US Ambassador Mr. Dan Rooney launched a 9/11 commemorative crystal sculpture by Master Engraver Sean Egan of Sean Egan Art Glass in Waterford City. The launch took place at the Bishop’s Palace in Waterford City in the presence of the Mayor of Waterford Cllr. Pat Hayes and Michael Walsh, Waterford City Manager.

The piece, ‘Miracle on Stairwell B’ is a visual representation of one of the few ‘good news’ stories that came from the tragic events of September 11^th, 2001.

A group of NY Fire Department officers were one of the first respondents to the north tower (the first to be hit) in New York on 9/11. They immediately started climbing stairwell B in intense heat and carrying 50lb of equipment. They were on their way up when they first heard and realised that the second tower had been hit and was collapsing. Chief officer Jay Jonas instinctively knew that it would not be long before their tower also collapsed and made the decision to exit the tower.

On the way down when they found a woman, Josephine Harris with a police officer. He has to decide to risk his and his men’s lives by trying to help them or to leave and save themselves. Of course, (despite Josephine’s protests) they elected to carry them out but this slowed them down significantly. When they reached the fourth floor they thought they felt fresh air but it was really the building starting to collapse so Jay Jonas radioed in their position.

And that is just what it did, collapse all around them. The searchers, even though they knew their position, could not locate where stairwell B was. Eventually though one of the fire officers called Mickey Kross regained consciousness, looked up and saw daylight. He reached up his hand through the rubble and heard the words “We’ve found someone”.

It is this moment in time that Sean Egan has recreated, where the hands of Mickey Kross and the search team member are just about to touch.

Josephine Harris survived and became known as the ‘Angel of stairwell B’. The fire officers survived because in rescuing Josephine they were in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately most of the officers above and below the fourth floor died in the collapse of the north tower. Josephine lived until January of this year and was given a full official fireman’s funeral.

The Ambassador was thrilled and moved by the significance of the piece. Sean was also pleased with the feedback he received for his work, “I’m humbled by the effort the Ambassador had made to come down to Waterford and launch my work. I’m really looking forward to officially presenting it to him in the RDS on September 11^th this year”.

Sean Egan Art Glass was set up in April 2009 by Sean Egan, a Master Engraver with Waterford Crystal for 35 years. When Waterford Crystal ceased manufacturing in Waterford City in January 2009, Sean opened his own business as a freelance crystal engraver.

His aim is to keep the age old skill of copper wheel engraving on crystal alive in Waterford and Ireland. An age old craft which has been practiced in Waterford for many decades, Sean was passionate that the skill would not be left to die.

Sean’s designs are depictions of nature, particularly marine life and wild life, landscapes and historical monuments. All Sean’s artwork is designed and hand engraved by Sean himself, and no two pieces are exactly the same. “As a freelance engraver, I take my inspiration for my designs from everything around me”.

The sculpture was commissioned by the US Embassy in Dublin with financial assistance from Waterford City Enterprise Board, Waterford City Council and Waterford Area Partnership.

A funny video posted by Home Instead Senior Care has received more than 3.2 million views in less than a month.

The video, starring senior Mary Maxwell, age 73, offers a humorous look at ageing and reminds us "laughter is the best medicine." The seven-minute-long video was filmed at Home Instead's annual convention in the USA.

In her "Dear Lord" prayer, Maxwell recognises some of the perils of growing old, such as "turning your left turn signal on in the morning and leaving it on all day," the appearance of "non-life-threatening skin growths large enough to name after deceased pets and relatives," and "driving up to a curbside mailbox and ordering a burger and fries."

"Mary was so funny and well-received at the convention, we decided to share the video in Ireland to provide a little comic relief for people during what is typically a very stressful time for them," said Danette Connolly, Director of Care, Home Instead Waterford. “The way the public has responded to Mary is heartwarming”, Danette added.

“The insight of a 73 year old woman who has so much life experience and so many funny tales to tell should be a lesson to us all. Often seniors aren’t afforded the time and respect they deserve, but they have so many interesting stories to tell and experiences to convey and deserve to be heard.”

The video has now been seen by 3.2 million people in 184 countries. As a result of this video, Home Instead has seen record web traffic in the last three weeks, including surges of 50-60% in new service and business development inquiries.

Legal Eagles put Credit Union under the spotlight!

Final year Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) Legal and Business Studies students recently examined the financial profile of four large credit unions in the South East that collectively have more than 100,00 members.

The students then made proposals for their financial management and suggested business initiatives that could be pursued.

The project commenced with a presentation by the Waterford CU financial controller, Peter Barry, and the students final output was viewed by the Waterford Credit Union general manager, Ilonda Parle.

Ms. Parle commended the students' application and innovation and welcomed the engagement of the educational process with the credit union movement. Lecturer John Maher remarked that this project gave the students a live case to which they could apply their skills and judgement.

Presenting such work also developed their interpersonal communications capability and this will stand to them in the workplace

Waterford City Enterprise Board, in association with Google, hosted a free web seminar giving small businesses and sole traders the opportunity to create a website and get on line for free.

The event which took place in the Tower Hotel saw over 60 business people in attendance, who heard about the importance of Irish businesses being on line.

Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO, Waterford City Enterprise Board welcomed the attendees and gave a presentation on “Bringing your business online – The Business Case.” Having identified that 40% of Irish commercial SMEs do not have a website and almost 60% do not have an entry in an online directory, Mr. Cullen’s presentation made the case as to why Irish businesses need to be online to survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive trading environment.

Ronan Cleary of Eagle Dreams addressed the audience as to how to get online through www.gettingbusinessonline.ie and Denis Hegarty of WSI Success on Line highlighted the potency of online marketing and how to maximise its benefits through Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Google ad words and social media.

Mr. Cullen was delighted with the attendance. “It’s great to see so many new and not so new small businesses now taking the initiative and putting the systems in place to get online. By working with local web professionals or through www.gettingbusinessonline.ie local businesses will be able to consolidate their current position in the marketplace and through their websites open up new markets.”

Waterford City Enterprise, in association with Google, will host a free web seminar that will give small businesses and sole traders the opportunity to create a website and get on line for free.

The initiative, “Getting Irish Business Online”, was recently launched by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, T.D. and calls on all businesses that do not have a website to log on to www.gettingbusinessonline.ie where they can create their business website for free.

Research by Google found that 40% of Irish commercial SMEs do not have a website and almost 60% do not have an entry in an online directory.

According to Ciaran Cullen, Acting CEO of Waterford City Enterprise, Waterford businesses match the national trend. “Some of these statistics uncovered by Google are quite astonishing. Currently, over 75% of customers use the internet as their primary tool for researching new companies and products and 68% believe that search engines help to find relevant sellers of products. Companies, particularly start ups, are at a distinct disadvantage if they don’t have an online presence. For many new companies there are many outlays in setting up, such as production, staff, overheads and utilities, so in many cases on line marketing takes a back seat.”

“This seminar and subsequent workshops will give small businesses that don’t have an online presence the advice, tools and resources to get online. The seminar will be followed up by two workshops for participants. These workshops will cost €25 and participants will get the chance to work with trainers and professionals in creating their own website, getting online, opening up new markets and generally becoming more competitive.”

“Looking at the statistics from Google we really believe that an online presence is crucial for small business success. By creating a website through Getting Irish Business Online or by working with local professional web designers SME’s can become more viable.”

The Bishop’s Palace Museum - history on the move!

The magnificently restored Bishop’s Palace will be officially opened by Dr Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport at on Wednesday June 22^nd in the presence of Cllr. Mary Roche, Mayor of Waterford City and Dr Pat Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland.

The historic Bishop’s Palace reveals the story of Waterford from 1700 to the 1970s and contains many items of national and international significance, including the only surviving Bonaparte ‘mourning cross’ in the world (only twelve of these crosses were originally made in 1812 on Bonaparte’s death ), the Penrose decanter – the oldest surviving piece of ‘Waterford Crystal’ which dates back to 1789, as well as the precious van der Hagen 1736 painting of Waterford city which was commissioned by Waterford Corporation for the princely sum of £20 and which has hung in the council chambers for many years.

The Bishop’s Palace offers a unique experience for visitors. The building contains a cornucopia of fascinating artifacts, period furniture, beautiful fireplaces and a collection of rare and important paintings. An entire floor of the building is dedicated to historic stories specific to Waterford such as Ballybricken’s pig markets, Waterford’s Home Rule story, the First World War in Waterford, the War of Independence in Waterford, childhood and household living in Waterford and the fascinating story of Brendan Bowyer and the ‘Hucklebuck’!

Waterford city boasts the finest collection of 18^th century architecture of any city in Ireland outside of Dublin, and its great legacy from the period is its elegant architecture, silverware and of course, fine glassmaking. This period of elegance began in Waterford in 1741 when the Anglo-German architect Richard Cassels designed the wonderful Bishop’s Palace. Today Richard Cassels is celebrated as one of Ireland’s greatest architects having designed most of the great buildings of Ireland including Powerscourt House, the Rotunda Hospital and the seat of the Irish parliament, Leinster House in Dublin.

New Viking Exhibition at Reginald’s Tower

Another significant step in Waterford’s development as a major tourism destination takes place this week, when Waterford Museum of Treasures opens an exciting new exhibition at Reginald’s Tower that, using a superb collection of historic and archaeological artefacts, tells the important story of Waterford’s Viking heritage.

Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city and dates back to 914 A.D. when the first Vikings came to Waterford. Almost 1,100 years later, traces of the Viking legacy can be found in Waterford in such names as Reginald’s Tower, Olaf Street, Ballygunner and Ballytruckle as well as in popular family surnames such as Doyle and MacAuliffe.

Among the exhibition’s many striking artefacts is a Viking ‘face weight’ that is thought may have originated in Iraq. Other items on display include combs, a copper dog collar, gaming pieces, ringed pins, and of course the famous kite brooch, of the finest pieces of Viking metal work surviving which was found in a pit in Peter Street and is known to have been made locally. The kite brooch bears testimony to the wealth and sophistication of Waterford’s early inhabitants.

Reginald's Tower is the oldest urban civic building in Ireland, and Waterford's most recognisable landmark. It was in this tower that Strongbow, leader of the Anglo-Norman invasion force, met Aoife, the daughter of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster. Their marriage was to change the course of Irish history forever.

In later centuries, the tower took on the functions of a royal castle and was later used as a mint and a prison. To this day, it remains Waterford's most recognisable landmark.

Within Waterford’s historic city centre known as the Viking Triangle, there is over 1,000 years of history in 1,000 paces. Along with its Medieval and Georgian architecture, Waterford possesses a remarkable collection of internationally important museum artefacts that span over a thousand years of the city’s history. As part of the development of the Viking Triangle, Waterford Museum of Treasures is relocating into three new locations: The Bishop’s Palace, Reginald’s Tower and Choristers’ Hall (opening 2012).

Waterford’s history, heritage and culture are key to developing a successful tourism industry and the development of Waterford’s historic city centre, the Viking Triangle, has been made possible under Fáilte Ireland’s Tourism Capital Investment Programme as part of National Development Plan 2007 – 2013. 33% of people do not need to be in a nursing home.

With over €1 billion being spent on the Fair Deal in Ireland and 33%[1] of people not needing to be in an nursing home, the Government is spending €330 million on people that could be looked after at home at a fraction of the cost.

At present 4.5% of the older population in Ireland live in long-stay residential care. That is 40% higher than the EU average of 3.2%. Of those residents 33% are assessed as either a low or medium dependency which means they could easily be cared for in the community. This means that with an average weekly cost of a nursing home at €778, there are substantial savings to be made if a big percentage of these people can be kept at home.

A further 1% of the population are in hospital, with evidence that for many of them their discharge is delayed because of the absence of Respite, Rehabilitation or adequate home-care funding. An acute hospital bed costs upwards of €7,000 per week.

With the prediction that the number of people 75+ to double by 2021, it makes it even more important that the Government needs to shift valuable resources into more cost effective community and home care services.

The Home Care Association propose a fresh approach to supporting older people to remain in their own homes, where substantial savings could be achieved compared to the cost of nursing home and hospital care for many people who do not need to be in those residential facilities and who would be much happier to live a more independent life in their homes.

Home Instead Senior Care highlights World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day takes place on Wednesday June 15^th. Every year this international initiative raises public awareness about elder abuse in its many forms; physical, sexual, psychological, financial, discriminatory and neglect.

Awareness of elder abuse has risen in the last year with more than 2,000 cases of elder abuse reported to the Health Service Executive (HSE) last year, up almost 13 per cent on the previous year.

It was recently reported in the Irish Times that the figures were presented to The Irish College of General Practitioners at their annual conference in Galway and showed that in 95% of cases the abuse was alleged to have occurred in the older person’s home. Approximately 65 per cent of the alleged victims were women and half the victims were over 80 years of age.

Home Instead Senior Care was established in Ireland in 2005 to bring practical, cost effective and above all, kind and compassionate non-medical care to elderly and disabled people who wish to remain living in their own homes.

Danette Connolly, Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care said: "Elder abuse is appalling and it so important that we come together as a community and take particular care to look out for older people and be aware of instances of elder abuse.”

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day highlights what measures we, as families, friends and communities, can take if we become aware of elder abuse.”

“We would urge anybody who is concerned that an elderly person in the community is at risk of abuse to contact the HSE Information Line on 1850 24 1850 or our Waterford Home Instead office directly on 051 333966.”

Ms. Connolly added “If you suspect an ageing loved one is the victim of abuse, Home Instead Senior Care encourages you to do the following;

Listen to seniors and their caregivers to make sure they are being cared for appropriately. Report suspected elder abuse to your local HSE office or An Garda Siochana. Visit ageing loved ones as often as possible so the older person sees you as someone they could trust and talk to about any difficulties they may have. Seniors that are isolated are more likely to be a victim of abuse.”

The most pertinent piece of advice I can offer to anyone is “Don't be silent. Tell someone. Get support and stop the abuse.”

Danette is Waterford Network’s “Professional Services” winner

Danette Connolly, Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care picked up the Female Excellence in Professional Services Award at the Network Waterford Women In Business Awards 2011, which were held in the Tower Hotel on Thursday, May 26th.

In 1998 New Zealander Danette arrived in Waterford armed with a nursing qualification and began work in the Intensive Care Unit of Waterford Regional Hospital. However, while in Waterford, Danette recognised a gap in the nursing recruitment market and founded Nursing and Allied Services which operated for a decade. She subsequently developed a state of the art training facility at the Cleaboy Business Park which provides training services to health professionals, manual handling training to all business sectors, manual handling and patient handling to the healthcare organisations and First Aid Training to individuals and groups.

Not content to rest on her laurels in January 2009 Danette and her husband Michael brought the highly successful and award winning, Home Instead Senior Care Franchise to Waterford. Home Instead Senior Care provides non-medical homecare to seniors in their own homes and has 17 owner operated offices in Ireland.

During 2010 and into 2011 Home Instead Senior Care experienced growth during challenging economic times. This growth has provided employment opportunities for Waterford.The organisation is not only recognised as a growing business, but also as a reputable and trusted member of the health care sector.

Danette has spearheaded many positive health initiatives including Positive Ageing Week in Waterford. Her hard work came to fruition in 2010 when Waterford was designated a Positive Ageing city.

At a local level Danette has been advocating for regulation of the home care sector with the best interest of those being cared for in mind. It is testimony to Danette’s drive and ambition that has established her as one of Waterford’s leading business women and the Female Excellence in Professional Services Award endorses this.

NAS aims to get Waterford hearts ship shape!

Waterford company NAS Training Centre, is behind the drive to compile and publish a comprehensive database of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) available in Waterford City, in preparation for the country’s largest quayside party – the Tall Ships Festival.

The premise of the database is to contain the locations of AED’s, in and around Waterford City. With an anticipated 500,000 visitors to Waterford City over the Tall Ships weekend, the availability of information about where AED’s are situated should help alleviate any potential tragedy.

The idea is the brainchild of Danette Connolly of NAS Training Centre, which first introduced the AED register in 2009. According to Ms. Connolly, “Back in 2009 we called on businesses, sports and social clubs to furnish us with details about their AED’s. As a result dozens of businesses contacted us and the information we compiled was also useful in campaigning to get more AED’s strategically located around Waterford City and County.”

“Waterford will experience one of the world’s most vibrant, colourful festivals over four jam packed days and the Tall Ships Festival will bring half a million visitors, tourists and families to our city. That is why we feel a comprehensive register of AED’s will be invaluable in the event that someone suffers a sudden cardiac event. The register will contain the names and addresses of individuals and businesses throughout the city that have an AED and if someone finds themselves requiring an AED, will know exactly where the nearest is located to them.”

Ms. Connolly added “Where concentrated volumes of people gather, there is a heightened risk of one of those suffering from a sudden cardiac event. In Ireland approximately 10,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease, stroke and other circulatory diseases. That’s why we feel that precautionary measures such as the AED register will inform and enlighten people about where the nearest AED is and assist those who are responding to any emergencies during the Tall Ships Festival.”

However, Ms. Connolly stressed that anyone confronted with a medical emergency should firstly call the emergency services.

Declan Barry of the Waterford Marine Search and Rescue has backed this initiative. He said “The arrival of the Tall Ships to Waterford in June is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s most prestigious maritime festivals. With up to half a million visitors expected in the city we strongly feel that any measures to assist us and the authorities in providing optimum safety measures is welcome.”

“The publication of the AED register is a great idea. By businesses working together to ensure that any emergencies can be dealt with swiftly and efficiently we anticipate a fun and memorable weekend for Waterford.”

South East businesses are ready for the Cloud!

HCS Business Solutions, an IT services provider with an extensive South Eastern client base, in association with the South Eastern Regional Chambers, recently conducted a survey about Cloud Computing and the perceptions surrounding it amongst businesses in the South East.

The survey was distributed to Chamber members across Waterford, Wexford, Clonmel, Carlow and Kilkenny. The findings reported that the majority of businesses were not only familiar with the concept of Cloud computing, but would consider using some form of cloud services. Only 4% of respondents had never heard of Cloud computing.

Simply put, cloud computing allows end users to securely leverage the Internet for application use, data storage, and other tools. Coupled with this cloud options are more cost effective, with no need for on site backup.

Almost 74% of the respondents were representative of small businesses employing up to 50 employees. This seems particularly apt as Paul Rellis, MD Microsoft Ireland, recently stated that cloud computing will give huge opportunities to individuals and companies alike.

“The power of computing that was once the preserve of large organisations can now be used by every organisation of every size. Cloud computing is a new industry that Ireland can take advantage of very quickly. The technology space changes so rapidly but this is a transformation that will be sustainable over the next couple of decades.”

Based on the respondents knowledge of Cloud computing the most important perceived benefit of using cloud services were:

1) it requires no capital up front investment

2) it cuts company costs

3) it allows staff to collaborate and share more information

Despite the positivity surrounding cloud services, many respondents expressed concerns about certain aspects of adopting the cloud. Across the region 85% of respondents stated that reliability was “very important” or “a showstopper” for them. Whereas over three quarters expressed security as a very important or show stopping concern in adopting the cloud.

While all of the respondents have broadband facilities, their broadband speed varies considerably with 10% of companies having a broadband speed of less than 2MB, while the majority of respondents (29.3%) have a broadband speed of 4 to 8 MB. However, despite the variations in broadband facilities, almost half of the businesses (43%) were confident that their broadband connection was reliable enough to support cloud services to their business.

Neil Phelan, Director of HCS Business Solutions, which conducted the survey, believes that the results do endorse the future of cloud computing.

“The premise of this regional survey was to test the waters amongst businesses about their perception of the cloud, their knowledge of the services and to unearth their main concerns about implementing a cloud strategy.”

“Although some questions arise around challenges to adopting cloud services - security, speed and reliability will inevitably remain valid concerns amongst businesses. However, we do believe that in time companies not just in the South East of Ireland, but globally, will regard cloud based services for businesses as the norm. Cloud computing will give users a more reliable, remote and transparent IT service resulting in greater uptime and more business stability, which in these tough times is crucial.”
