Home Instead Senior Care hosts Senior Safety Information evening

Home Instead Senior Care Waterford recently hosted a free Senior Safety Information evening in Dooley’s Hotel, Waterford.

Danette Connolly, Director of Care, Home Instead Senior Care, was joined by a panel of specialists who provided advice to seniors and their families on how to optimise personal safety and wellbeing.

Danette offered helpful tips to reduce the risk of trips and falls in the home, how to be prepared should an emergency arise and how to be vigilant in light of the increased incidents of identity fraud and internet scams.

Also on the panel was Nicola Buchanan, Pharmacist with Mulligan’s Pharmacy.  Nicola spoke about the importance of medication management and revealed that 80% of elderly self-medicate with over the counter products and this group were seven times more likely to suffer from Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR).  Nicola went on to stress the importance of medication reconciliation and compliance, stating that 50% of medication non- compliance amongst seniors is deliberate.

Bernie Shiel of Emergency Response highlighted the benefits of personal security alarms and showcased the recently launched Homecare Support package in association with Home Instead Senior Care.  This initiative provides a trained local care professional promptly, 24 hours a day, once the button has been pressed on a security pendant or unit and an initial assessment is complete.

She further welcomed last month’s Government decision to reverse the cut in grants for personal security alarms. The allocation for devices under the Senior Alert scheme was to be reduced from €2.45 million last year to €1.1 million in 2013 as a result of budget cutbacks, but that decision was turned around following the securing of resources to reinstate the grant at last year’s levels.

Cllr. Gary Wyse drew attention to the excellent work of Waterford City Council’s Sustainable Neighbourhood Unit and showcased some of the practical and helpful security aids that are available to all Waterford seniors at greatly reduced rates.

Finally, Garda Jonanne O’Mahony of Waterford Community Policing underlined the importance of remaining vigilant in light of the increased incidents of bogus callers or doorstep scammers.  She emphasised that seniors should always ask for I.D., but more importantly stressed that “when in doubt, keep them out!”

Danette Connolly said that the premise of the evening was to offer as much practical advice to seniors and their families as possible.  “There is so much information out there for seniors in relation to personal safety, security, medication and health, we felt it was apt to condense it into one highly informative evening.”

Danette added “We were delighted with the calibre of speakers and how well they communicated that with a little extra care and vigilance our seniors can be safer and more secure in their own homes.”

Home Instead Senior Care offers an array of senior care services such as light housekeeping and laundry, meal preparation, transport and companionship, up to and including personal care, dementia care, post hospital care and disability care.

Ballybeg group wins the inaugural Padraig O Griofa youth Enterprise Board award

On Thursday February 7th Ballybeg CYP were awarded the ‘Padraig O Griofa Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award from Waterford City Enterprise Board.

Last summer Waterford Youthbank and Waterford City Enterprise Board collaborated to establish a unique relationship aimed at encouraging young entrepreneurs. YOUTHBANK Enterprise Grants provide community groups with the necessary training to develop an enterprising idea, the skills to sell it and funds to run it.  Waterford City Enterprise Board grants were available to all youth groups within Waterford city with successful applications, the evaluation of these applications was undertaken by their peers.

The programme included weekly workshops delivered by local business people giving practical training on subjects such as promoting your idea, finding your market and getting through the Youthbank interview process.

Successful applicants were then paired with a business mentor who met with the groups offering support and advice.  The groups with products were offered the opportunity of a cabin to sell their goods at this year’s Waterford city Winterval Festival.

Padraig O Griofa was a well regarded businessman in Waterford and chaired the Waterford City Enterprise Board’s evaluation committee since its inception. He passed in March of 2012 and, wishing to remember his contribution to the business community and Waterford City Enterprise Board in particular, the Board established the ‘Padraig O Griofa Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award. This award was judged from the various Youthbank groups, and on the criteria of enterprise skills, planning, administration and enthusiasm.

A number of groups stood out, but the Ballybeg Fretwork group were named as overall winners. The awards took place at the Waterford Community Youth Service offices in the Edmund Rice Youth & Community Multiplex on Manor Street where in excess of fifty attended.

Ciaran Cullen (CEO) Waterford City Enterprise Board committed to renewing the relationship next year, “The effort and work that both Youthbank and these community groups put into their enterprise projects is inspiring. It was a pleasure to be in a position to invest in a project where the stakeholders are investing so much themselves.”

Home Instead Senior Care, which provides an array of senior care services, has announced plans to increase its range of care packages in 2013.

“Home Instead Senior Care is the world’s leading provider of non-medical, in-home services to seniors, and has almost 1,000 offices throughout the world.  Since the Waterford office opened its doors four years ago we have strived to bring optimum home care to our clients and their families.”

Ms. Connolly added, “In 2013 we will be introducing a further range of care packages.  These packages range from the few hours a day to 24 hour care or respite care in the home.  At present there is a waiting list for most of the nursing homes in Waterford making home care a very viable option.”

“There is tax relief available for homecare which can reduce the cost by up to
41 %.  Home care provides individualized one-to-one care that can be a solution to many seniors needs, whether it is because of physical limitation or a condition such as dementia, Home Instead Senior Care works with the individual and their family to put in place  care packages to best suit their needs.”

Eishtec to create 250 new smartphone support jobs in Wexford

Eishtec, the Waterford based customer contact solutions provider, announced today that it is to create 250 new jobs by October 2013 as part of a major expansion via a new custom built facility in Drinagh, Co. Wexford.

Eishtec currently employs 400 people in its Waterford site at the Cleaboy Business Park and these additional jobs will bring its total workforce to 650 across the South East region of Ireland.

Brian Barry, one of the co-founders of Eishtec, said: “We are particularly encouraged by this growth because in January 2012 we announced 250 jobs for Waterford and, based on delivering strong performance to date, we have been able to grow beyond that figure to 400. We want to acknowledge the personal interest and support of Minister Bruton and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation as well as the ongoing support of Enterprise Ireland in our growth to date and these new jobs will be subject to their continued assistance”.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, said:

“Eishtec is a great role model for what we are trying to achieve in the Irish economy. This is an Irish company, founded by three former employees of a multinational, winning business in a highly competitive market, and growing employment in a part of the country which has suffered from high levels of unemployment. Through continued implementation of the Action Plan for Jobs I am determined to ensure that companies like Eishtec can continue to start-up, grow, and create the jobs we need”.

The growth is on the back of Eishtec securing an expansion to an existing contract with EE, the company behind the UK telecommunications brands Orange, T-Mobile and EE. EE is a new brand that recently launched the UK’s first mobile superfast 4G network.

Eishtec will expand its support for Orange and T-Mobile customers with smartphone service and technical care, including Android and iPhone.

Making the announcement Heather Reynolds, co-founder, said: “We believe this expansion is testament to the skills and positive attitude of the people we've recruited. We are delighted to be expanding our business further to 650.
Recruitment for the new positions is currently underway.”

"This is another significant win for Eishtec, the South East and Ireland. We have the skills and experience in our team to provide the highest quality services to our clients and help support the achievement of its business objectives.”   Ms. Reynolds added. “We're delighted we can maintain a proud tradition of providing market-leading customer services to blue chip organisations.”

Eishtec was set up by Heather Reynolds, Brian Barry and Colm Tracey in May 2011 with nine employees. The company is now recruiting for service and technical support roles, with all training provided by Eishtec.

Ballybeg Youth Project gets festive

The young people at the Ballybeg Youth Project have certainly had a busy few months!

Since September the group has been working hard to create a wonderful array of hand crafted Christmas decorations, wreaths and candles. The gifts were available at the Waterford City Enterprise Village on Bailey’s New Street during the opening weekend of Winterval.

As a result of the positive feedback the group received the hand-crafted gifts will also be available in Centra, Ballybeg on Thursday, December 13th and also directly from the Ballybeg Youth Project.

According to Lil Quinn, Community Youth Worker, BYP, the initiative has proved extremely popular with the group.  “All the boys and girls involved in the project enjoyed every minute of it.  It allowed them to let their creativity flourish and we were amazed at the standard that was produced.”

“The boys worked hard in manufacturing high quality crafted Christmas decorations and the girls produced a wonderful festive selection of wreaths and candle trays. They also enjoyed the opportunity to sell and interact with the public at Waterford City Enterprise Village.”

“The experience has given them the confidence to think about developing the array of products on offer and already they are thinking about launching their Valentine’s, wedding and Easter ranges.”

The Ballybeg Youth Project provides clubs, programmes and activities for young people aged 9 to 21 years living in Ballybeg.  Activities include educational programmes, sporting opportunities, group games, arts and crafts, fretwork, a games room, large screen TV, cyber centre, Youth Cafe and lots more.

If you want to view some of the work from the Ballybeg Youth Project come along to Centra in Ballybeg on Thursday, December 13th, enjoy a complimentary mince pie and hot drink and pick up a festive bauble or two to brighten your Christmas tree!
