Home Instead Senior Care and Flahavan’s work together to “set seniors up for life”

Good nutrition is vitally important in helping older people deal with wintry conditions and with this is mind, Home Instead Senior Care has teamed up with Flahavan’s to provide porridge to its clients throughout Waterford city and county.

Over the coming weeks, Home Instead Senior Care, through its caregivers, will be distributing a two week porridge supply to its 150 clients, along with Flahavan’s goodie bags.

Acknowledging the generosity of Flahavan’s in providing free porridge to Home Instead clients in Waterford, Danette Connolly, Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care says, “We are delighted to be involved with this promotion with Flahavan’s and have been astounded by their level of generosity in providing product to our clients.”

“At Home Instead we repeatedly emphasise the benefits of healthy eating for seniors and without a doubt, porridge is one of the healthiest and fibre rich foods available. A good start to the day is vital for seniors, particularly during the cold weather. The slow release energy will keep seniors going until lunchtime, tastes great and has a host of health benefits.”

Dolores Whelan, Brand Manager Flahavan’s added, “Flahavan’s is delighted to lend its support to this campaign to ensure seniors get the nutrition they need to keep healthy and well.”

“For the older generation porridge is a well established stable of their daily diet and most are familiar with its health benefits. In fact many studies which have focused on the beneficial effects of oat fibre have found eating increased oat fibre resulted in a lowering of blood cholesterol and oats are also rich in insoluble fibre which is important for good digestion.”

Ms. Whelan added “It is crucial that seniors get the daily nutrition they need and this incentive will make it a little easier for them to have access to a healthy and nutritious start to the day.”

Home Instead Senior Care provides services to over 150 seniors in their own homes in the Waterford area. Its caregivers help clients maintain their independence by assisting them with activities of daily living such as meal preparation, laundry, shopping, light housekeeping, driving and incidental transportation. The result is companionship and independence, allowing seniors to feel safe while they age in the home they've lived in for years.

Flahavan's, located in the village of Kilmacthomas is a family company milling quality Irish oats for over six generations. Flahavan's is best known for producing Ireland's No.1 porridge oats brand - Flahavan's Progress Oatlets. Check out www.facebook.com/flahavans
