Health Directory publishes list of essential Christmas contacts

Health Directory.ie, Ireland’s newest dedicated on-line health directory, has published a list of essential Christmas contact numbers for a host of organistations that can assist those who are lonely, feel the pressure of Christmas, are under financial strain or just need to talk to someone about their concerns.

Health Directory.ie is the brainchild of Catherine Breen, a practicing beauty, body and complementary therapist with almost 13 years experience. The premise of Health Directory.ie is to give users comprehensive and up to date information about professionals working in the health and well being sectors in Ireland.

Ms. Breen commented “For those who find Christmas a particularly stressful time, Health Directory.ie has published the contact details for organisations such as Aware, Alone, Childline, Mental Health Ireland, Focus Ireland, Body Whys and a whole host of organisations that can help us at what can be a very trying time.”

“We would like to think that Health Directory.ie can alleviate some of the uncertainty about what help is out there, particularly at Christmas. Carlow's Dinn Ri Group to open the Woodman Bar

The Woodman Bar, which is regarded as one of Waterford’s most respected and loved traditional bars, will reopen its doors on Friday, 17th December.

While it has kept all of its unique features, the Woodman Bar on John Street has undergone a subtle facelift in order to increase the comfort and service provided to its customers.

David Fitzpatrick, who has managed the Woodman for the past fourteen years explains, ‘It was important to us to ensure that The Woodman preserved that special atmosphere that has made it so popular. The Woodman of old had a great reputation as a place to go for a late pint, good company, a catch up on all things Waterford; hurling, racing, business and politics. More importantly it was all done in a relaxed, comfortable setting and that is exactly how we plan to keep it. I can not wait for the 17th to come, and I will be delighted to welcome back the Woodman’s loyal customer base and hope to see some new faces too!’, comments Fitzpatrick.

The Woodman will be operated by Carlow based Dinn Ri Group, which also now controls the former Ruby's Nightclub and what were Muldoon’s and Oxygen Nightclub. The Dinn Ri Group includes award winning Dinn Ri bar, the legendary Foundry nightclub and Tower Live venue. They also run the Barracks Bar in Carlow, Ireland first interactive bar.

Eugene McGovern, General Manager of Dinn Ri Group, explains, ‘We are very excited to have the opportunity to come to Waterford and become involved in these venues. We will be working hard to breathe new life into the Waterford entertainment sector by offering new and exciting venues in the heart of the city.”

“This is a very big investment for us. We will be creating 12 new jobs immediately at the Woodman Bar. In March, we will create an additional 50 jobs with the opening of our nightclub at the former Ruby’s site. By the end of 2011, we expect to be employing 140 people in Waterford city.”

Dinn Ri Group’s success is based on strong local experience and knowledge. Extensive market research has been commissioned in order to discern what the general public looks for in entertainment in Waterford.

Eugene McGovern adds, ‘Dinn Ri Group has huge respect for the heritage of these Waterford’s venues and appreciates the ownership that the people of Waterford hold for them. We look forward to creating dynamic and unique venues that will reinvigorate nightlife in Waterford.’
So, come and enjoy a new chapter for the Woodman Bar, John Street, at its reopening on Friday 17th December. You can also get some updates on its new Facebook page ‘WoodmanBar Waterford’.

Mason McGee Hearing highlights isolation through hearing loss

Mason McGee Hearing, formerly Tower Hearing, recently hosted an Open Day in their new offices at Manor House on the Cork Road.

The premise of the day was to inform visitors about hearing loss and its personal and social impacts. The prevalence of hearing loss is high, with one in six adults in Ireland suffering from hearing loss or impairment. This equates to 12,000 adults in Co. Waterford experiencing this condition, so nearly every family in Waterford is affected by, or has some experience of, hearing loss.

Rosie Mason and Mary McGee of Mason McGee Hearing have between them an extensive amount of professional experience of working in the field of hearing loss. Rosie Mason is a qualified audiologist with over 30 years' experience in hearing testing and fitting hearing aids and Mary McGee is a qualified hearing therapist having returned from the UK after practicing there for 14 years.

The Open Day enjoyed a large turnout and the Mayor of Waterford Cllr. Mary Roche was also in attendance to meet patients of the practice and to see the facilities within the practice.

Cllr. Roche commented “I was taken aback at how many people suffer from hearing loss or impairment in Waterford. On my visit to Mason McGee Hearing I learned that not only can it be very difficult to hear in social settings or to hear above background noise, it can lead sufferers to become more reclusive, suffer fatigue and be less inclined to interact in group settings.”

“Our hearing is something that we should be more aware of and I would urge us all to seek advice and testing if there is any possibility our hearing has changed.”

Rosie Mason added “With Christmas around the corner it can be a very challenging time for our hearing. Hard-of-hearing people can find any busy or social occasion a lonely time. If you are among people but unable to follow what is said, it can be very isolating.”

Mary McGee added “Hearing loss can develop so slowly it goes un-noticed by the individual but family, friends or colleagues can be aware of difficulties much sooner.

Home Instead issues Budget Advice for Seniors

The announcement of the Four Year Plan (National Recovery Plan 2011 – 2014) saw social welfare payments reduced by €3bn. Despite the retention of the State pension at its current level, the €3bn. social welfare reduction coupled with new health charges is expected to be felt by seniors.

In light of this Home Instead Senior Care has issued some pertinent advice to seniors to cope with cuts to social welfare entitlements.

Danette Connolly, Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care Waterford said, “Unfortunately the prognosis is not good and everybody is expecting to take a hit with the announcement of the Four Year National Recovery Plan and the upcoming Budget 2011. However, there are ways that seniors in particular should be able to make slight adjustments to their spending in order to get the most from their pension, savings and any supplementary income.”

Some of the measures include:

Make sure you are aware of all of your entitlements. In many cases seniors are entitled to claim for transport, medical costs, tax relief and grants for home care etc. All the information on these can be found in The Pensioner’s Handbook available free from the Home Instead office in Waterford 051 333966.

Compare the costs from service providers, particularly when it comes to home and motor insurance policies. Shop around for discounted policies for seniors.

When it comes to your grocery bills again the advice is to shop around. Many “own brands” are cheaper than brand labelled goods. As goods sold under the store brand are subject to the same regulations are branded goods, you can expect the same quality, with the bonus of a significant cost saving.

Another way to save on household costs is to turn it off! Turn the lights off when leaving a room and switch appliances off rather than leaving them on standby. This will save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use.

Always ask for discounts at the beginning of a transaction. Many businesses and services now offer “senior” discounts, particularly hairdressers, hotels and transport companies. If they are on offer, make sure to ask for them.

Regularly check your refrigerator, freezer and drawers. Use up food that is within its best before date before purchasing more of the same food stuffs. Also check the door seal is in good condition.

Home Instead Senior Care provides services to seniors in their own homes and is approved by the HSE. Its caregivers help clients maintain their independence by assisting them with activities of daily living such as meal preparation, laundry, shopping, light housekeeping, driving and incidental transportation.

La Boheme brings a true American flavour to Waterford

Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving is a celebration of the Native Americans and Pilgrim’s giving thanks for nature’s bounty. In fact, during this "first" Thanksgiving, Pilgrims and Native Americans worked side by side to hunt and prepare food as equals and friends. Their friendship and cooperation was yet another thing for which to be thankful.

Today, when we think of Thanksgiving, images of American football, pumpkin pie, turkey dinner and sweet potatoes come to mind. As a holiday that surpasses Christmas in the United States, Eric and Christine Theze of La Boheme will be bringing a taste of Thanksgiving to Waterford this year.

Christine, who is originally from Chappaqua, New York, has lived in Ireland for the last 15 years and wanted to relive the authentic Thanksgiving feast. According to Christine, “Because I’ve been out of the States for so long I genuinely yearned for a traditional turkey and all the trimmings Thanksgiving feast. That is why we decided to offer it to our guests”.

“Thanksgiving evokes such wonderful memories for me and I wanted Waterford diners to experience not just the food, but the atmosphere, the tradition and the heritage of Thanksgiving at La Boheme”.

Chef and Proprietor Eric Theze, will be preparing a Thanksgiving feast of turkey, sweet potato, and all the trimmings on Thursday, November 25th.

In fact the run up to Christmas will be peppered with a host of themed evenings at La Boheme. Thursdays in December will be full of festive fun and cheer as melodic Carol singers provide the choral accompaniment throughout the evening and New Year’s Eve ups the tempo with a fantastic menu and live music.

Mason McGee Hearing, formerly Tower Hearing, celebrates new look and new premises.

Tower Hearing, formerly of Parnell Street, has moved to new premises on the Cork Road. Not only is the team enjoying its new home at Manor House, they are also delighted to announce their new brand name – Mason McGee Hearing.

Since opening its doors in Waterford almost three years ago, Rosie and Mary have noticed a marked increase in demand for their services. In fact, in 2008 a report was published which presented results of an extensive study of scientific research on the social and economic impacts of hearing loss. This report showed that one in six adults in Europe suffer from hearing loss. That equates to 12,000 adults in County Waterford so nearly every family is affected by hearing loss.

Rosie says “A hearing loss can easily develop without you noticing. If your hearing deteriorates a tiny bit every few months after a few years you would be missing a lot, but you might not be aware of the very gradual change. Family, friends or colleagues can be aware of difficulties long beforehand.”

“Listening in background noise is often particularly troublesome even with a hearing aid. Hearing loss not only affects communication but results in the listener being more mentally fatigued than people with normal hearing after listening to speech in a noisy place.”

At Mason McGee Hearing, the team is uniquely placed to work with this problem with their combined training and experience. They not only work with all levels of hearing loss but offer those troubled by tinnitus (ringing in the ear) a Tinnitus Management Programme too.

Mary McGee added “Whilst most of us take hearing for granted, those who suffer from hearing loss may feel isolated and avoid social and group situations. With any degree of hearing loss there are some ‘tactics’ you can use that will make communication easier.”

Mason McGee Hearing is delighted to host a free Open Day at the new premises on Tuesday, November 23rd from 10am to 4pm. Throughout the day the team will be on hand to answer any queries visitors may have about any aspects of hearing. There will also be free hearing tests and free checks and cleaning of any existing hearing aids.

For more information about the Mason McGee Hearing Open Day at Manor House (entrance through John Rohan Auctioneers), Cork Road, just call 051 852918 or call along on the day between 10am and 4pm. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

WCRC goes to the “top of the class”

The Government’s commitment to integrating ICT in teaching and learning was set out in the Programme for Government and the need for investment in this area was recognised in the National Development Plan.

More recently the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, T.D. announced that 698 post primary schools across the country are to get €21million in grants for high-tech equipment. This latest investment brings the total equipment grant outlay under the ICT in Schools programme to more than €43m within the past twelve months.

Waterford Computer Repair Centre is a local company advocating the benefits of improved ICT capacity of schools through shared computing technology by embarking on a campaign to deliver the news of these benefits to all schools within Waterford.

According to Sean Hegarty, Director of WCRC, the benefits of introducing shared resource computing in primary and secondary schools are manifold.
“Whilst every teacher has the welfare and learning of their students at heart, budget cuts and increased class sizes make it more and more difficult to engage and connect with all students on an equal footing.”

“Recent studies indicate that not only does shared computing enable greater involvement and interaction from the student at a much lower cost, it’s green, it marries technology and learning like never before and it utilises classroom space better.”

“The premise of shared computing is quite simple really. Multiple students have their own monitor, keyboard and mouse which connect via a device to one single computer. By running shared computing software, the computer essentially runs in multiple instances creating a virtual workstation for each student. “

Shared Resource Computing is steadily gaining in popularity as teachers and trainers realise the importance of saving money, utilising resources to a fuller extent and involving students.

Seafield National School in Bunmahon, Co. Waterford has benefited from shared resource computing with the aid of the Government’s technology grant.

According to Ann Coffey, Principal of Seafield NS “We installed the system last January and not only have we noticed a marked improvement in the learning experience for the children, the school has saved a significant amount of money and it’s a green solution in line with our school’s green objectives.”

“We now have six workstations running on one computer in our classroom which just take the space of one small desk. Computer learning and access to the internet is now part of daily student activities. I can teach other classes whilst having six students doing a project on the computers, and the children look forward to the prospect of being able to use the computers

The future for SMB’s is clear as groundbreaking Waterford IT company introduces “cloud computing”

When Hegarty Computer Services was established in 1994 one of its main objectives was to provide IT solutions to SME’s in the South East. Today, 16 year later whilst IT solutions are still an integral part of what the company does, it has moved on to provide innovative business solutions to the SMB market.

Keeping in tune with the ever evolving technologies in the IT sector, HCS has developed a suite of managed services that reflect the shift towards “cloud computing.” Although the term seems rather nebulous, in essence cloud computing ultimately has a simple purpose: it allows end users to leverage the Internet for application use, data storage, and other tools. Not only that but cloud options are more cost effective, there is no need for on site backup and no more costs associated with managing IT infrastructure.

The latest development from HCS Business Solutions is the innovative “Tech” range – a suite of managed services called TechWatch, TechAssure and TechSolve.

This trilogy of advanced remote managed services clearly demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and development of cloud solutions to the small and medium sized business markets.

According to Neil Phelan, Sales Director, HCS Business Solutions, this new mantel of managed services will give HCS customers a remote, reliable and transparent IT service resulting in greater uptime and more business stability.

“The introduction of TechWatch, TechAssure and TechSolve is a new departure in IT solutions, specifically geared towards the SMB market.”

Mr. Phelan added, “We developed the triumvirate of services after talking to our customers and extensively researching the small and medium sized enterprise markets. By listening to our clients we found that they wanted IT solutions that were accountable and more importantly reliable, and they wanted them looked after elsewhere. That’s why the Tech brands offer a phased level of monitoring and managed services which are tailor made to suit the individual requirements and budgets of small and medium sized companies.”

This “cloud computing” will principally allow the SMB sector to get on with the business of running their business without the worry of managing IT services or paying exorbitant consultancy fees.

Dan Hegarty, Director, HCS Business Solutions said, “Competitiveness and transparency are crucial in business today, now more than ever. Most SMB’s will need to see distinct advantages to installing a remote managed system.

TechWatch ensures early detection and prevention of network problems, TechAssure provides companies with a suite of maintenance and monitoring services and TechSolve delivers technology solutions that can save money and provide companies with a competitive edge.”

Today, HCS is accredited with a unique set of partnerships and accreditations that offers customers complete business solutions. With some of the highest accreditations in the industry HCS Business Solutions has plans to continue to grow and offer more and more exciting software innovations to customers in the South East.

Home Instead advises on keeping seniors safe this holiday season

With an increase of over 21%* in robberies throughout the country and recent assaults against the elderly, Home Instead Senior Care in Waterford encourages seniors to stay safe and make their home more secure.

"The majority of older people wish to maintain their independence and live in their own home for as long as possible, so it is important that we come together as a community and take particular care to look out for older people and take security measures to help people stay safe ", said Danette Connolly of Home Instead Senior Care in Waterford.

Robberies are also expected to increase during the holiday season - homes are more frequently left empty as many people, old and young, are out shopping for Christmas presents or spending time with family and friends. Presents and treats are also more visible this time of year as people leave gifts out under the Christmas tree, which is usually placed near a window or they leave empty boxes outside the home so temptation really increases for burglars this time of year.

To help keep Waterford seniors safe, Home Instead Senior Care encourages older people to take the following steps and make their home more secure:
· Keep front and back doors locked at all times, even if you are at home. Windows should also be locked.
· Do not open the door to strangers. If a repair or sales person arrives to the home do not let them in without calling their company to verify their identity.
· Keep your house lit at night. This shows signs of life and activity, a darkened home night after night gives burglars the illusion that the house is vacant.
· Keep Christmas presents hidden and secure. Do not leave presents under the tree in full view of burglars who may be peering through windows, keep presents hidden and secure until Christmas day.
· Do not leave a spare key outdoors. Do not hide your key outside under a doormat, a flowerpot or any place that may be easily uncovered by a burglar.
· Call the police if you come home and find a door or window opened. Do not enter the house if there are signs of forced entry.

La Boheme Restaurant goes Wild!

Since opening its doors in June 2006, La Boheme Restaurant on George’s Street has earned a reputation as a restaurant that truly embraces fine dining in a unique setting.

Under the stewardship of Chef and owner Eric Theze La Boheme has gained a host of accolades including the Michelin Guide Award (three years running), Georgina Campbell Excellence Award (four years running) and featured in the Top Ten most romantic restaurants in Ireland according to Food and Wine Magazine.

Always mindful of seasonal food La Boheme is delighted to introduce its Game Nights on three Thursdays within the month of November. Following the success of last season’s themed events La Boheme’s Game Nights mark a new and bold initiative for this innovative restaurant.

According to Christine Theze, co-owner, the nights are proving to be extremely popular with Waterford diners. “The concept behind the Game nights is to introduce a more extensive range of fresh in-season food.”

“We have sourced a wonderful selection of game from within a 30km. range of Waterford City. Not only is the game wild and fresh, not many people realise that game, venison in particular, is one of the healthiest and most succulent meats available.”

“Because the animals are wild and not force fed or reared in captivity the meat is flavoursome and when slow cooked produces a wonderful flavour and texture.”

A selection of some of the game dishes at La Boheme includes chargrilled venison steak, pastilla of wood pigeon breast, braised pheasant and baked partridge.

La Boheme works with a number of suppliers from the South East. Paul Fletcher from Premier Game was particularly pleased to supply La Boheme, “It is so important that restaurants do what La Boheme is attempting. La Boheme always looks for quality local produce first and also offers alternative choices to their menus. These themed nights give the public a broader choice and ultimately help everyone in the industry.”

Mulligans Tramore, Waterford’s only finalist in National Retail Excellence Awards.

This Saturday evening in Galway City Mulligans Pharmacy, Tramore will be Waterford’s sole representative at the Sunday Independent’s Retail Excellence Awards 2010.

Established by industry group, Retail Excellence Ireland, the awards recognise and reward the highest standards of excellence across the entire retail industry – not just one particular sector.

From a total of 590 leading retail companies who operate over 8,000 stores in the Irish market the judging process began in August and under the strictest criteria including personal visits (Mystery Shoppers) Retail Excellence Ireland whittled the entries down to the final Top 30. Of these finalists Mulligans new pharmacy at Summerhill in Tramore Co. Waterford is one of six competing for ‘Best Large Store’. Others competing in this category are;

PC World in Dublin
The Kilkenny Shop of Cork
Portwest of Dublin
Carraig Donn of Kilkenny;
Howard’s Storage World of Dublin

Now in its 13th year the Retail Excellence Ireland Awards is the benchmark by which the best in retail are judged. The Awards are focused on promoting and recognising standards of excellence in retail and the Awards programme is now the largest of its kind in Ireland. Mulligans Pharmacy is no stranger to these awards being short listed last year for ‘Best Store’ following the refurbishment of its City Square pharmacy in 2009. (See attached picture)

On Tuesday May 25th 2010 Mulligan’s pharmacy opened what was then their latest store at Tramore, they subsequently acquired Mullally’s pharmacy in Dunmore East. Tramore represented a state of the art pharmacy standing in a prime location in the future development of Tramore retail services at the Summerhill centre. Beside Lidl, opposite Tesco and just off the Ring Road this new centre offers an alternative retail option to the already vibrant Tramore shopping experience.

Ronan Mulligan at the time said that they were delighted to have finally opened this new store, ‘We have been looking to open a branch in Tramore for some time now but were waiting for suitable premises. Now we’re open I see how appropriate it is that a Waterford owned family business has a store in such a vibrant part of the county’.

Last week he also expressed his delight at Tramore being nominated as one of the countries top 30 stores, “While we try not to highlight one pharmacy over another this nomination is a reflection of all the hard work our staff in Tramore has put in to the venture, especially in such difficult times.”

The Retail Excellence Ireland Awards in association with the Sunday Independent to be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway on Saturday November 6th. The awards will be attended by over 500 representatives of the Irish retail industry and hosted by Miriam O’Callaghan.

Enterprising Wexford woman launches on line Health Directory

It has often been highlighted that during times of recession a new generation of self made entrepreneurs springs up to take the economic bull by the horns. One such enterprising individual is Wexford woman Catherine Breen, who recently launched Health Directory.ie.

Health Directory.ie is Ireland’s newest dedicated on-line health directory tailored specifically to conventional and alternative health practitioners and service providers. The premise of the website is to give the general public free access to a myriad of information about practitioners in the island of Ireland.

Health Directory.ie is the brainchild of New Ross woman Catherine Breen, a practicing beauty, body and complementary therapist with almost 13 years experience. According to Ms. Breen, Health Directory.ie will give users comprehensive and up to date information about professionals working in the health and well being sectors in Ireland.

“The concept is quite simple. We wanted users to make an informed decision when it comes to their health issues. Health Directory.ie is an easy to navigate site containing contact and web site details about a host of conventional and alternative practitioners, such as G.P.’s, dentists, physiotherapists, chiropodists, nutritionists, counselors, children’s health professionals and so much more. In fact the list is almost inexhaustible.”

“Each county features a selection of professionals so it makes it easier for the user to find out about who is practicing in their location, which organisations they are affiliated to and what areas of therapy they specialise in. In order to offer a comprehensive site we have made the registration process for practitioners very straightforward and in fact it only takes a few minutes on line.”

The initiative has received grant aid from local enterprise and development organisations. Eileen Dake of Wexford Local Development said “It is encouraging to work with such an energetic and innovative individual as Catherine. By allowing users to know about the health services available to them the decisions they make will be more measured.”

“These are the kind of projects that Wexford Local Development is willing to support and encourage as the potential for growth and expansion and the subsequent opportunity to create local employment is paramount to our economic recovery.”

Tom Banville of Wexford County Enterprise Board added, “Catherine has showed a true enterprising spirit which is refreshing to see in today’s economic climate. Wexford County Enterprise Board is confident that Health Directory.ie will flourish and as an organisation that supports start-ups we are delighted to give Catherine the backing she deserves.”

Former Taoiseach and renowned Statesman returns to Waterford

For 20 years Cathedral Close Apartments have been providing sheltered accommodation in Waterford and the South East. To mark its 20th anniversary, Cathedral Close will host a celebration on Sunday, September 26th.

The celebration will take the form of an open afternoon with events geared to interest and inform the active retired of Waterford. The highlight of this event will be the attendance of former Taoiseach Dr. Garret FitzGerald, a patron of Cathedral Close.

Dr. FitzGerald boasts an impressive and extensive political career, becoming a Senator in 1965 and being elected to Dáil Éireann in 1969. He became Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Fine Gael / Labour Coalition Government in 1973 and became leader of Fine Gael in 1977. In June 1981 Garret FitzGerald became Taoiseach until March 1982.

He then served a second period as Taoiseach from December 1982 to March 1987. Dr. FitzGerald retired from politics in 1992, although he came out of political retirement to campaign actively in the second referendum campaign on the Nice Treaty in 2002.

Dr. FitzGerald will be remembered by many as the dignitary who visited the Cathedral Close Apartments in 1990 for the signing of contracts and again during the building process and has remained a friend of the Close ever since.

Cathedral Close offers 30 apartments on three floors, all with either lift or stair-lift access. Each apartment is unfurnished but has a fully fitted kitchen with refrigerator and electric cooker. The Cathedral Close (being 300 years old) is thought to be the oldest continually occupied building in Waterford. In its present form Cathedral Close dates from 1990 when government grants and local subscriptions enabled its refurbishment.

As well as celebrating The Close’s 20th anniversary, the event will highlight the features and benefits of living in Cathedral Close. A number of interesting and short talks by Eamon McEneaney of Waterford Treasures on ‘The future plans for the Viking Triangle’ and Dr. Eithne Brenner on ‘Health and the elderly’ will also take place throughout the afternoon.

There are tours of the facilities available for those who have a genuine interest in its offering and have never seen the apartments and living areas. Other organisations who supply products and services to the active retired will also provide information for those in attendance.

The proceedings start at 2pm on Sunday, September 26th at Cathedral Close Apartments opposite Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford City and all interested parties are most welcome.

Bin War Heats Up

Mr. Binman, the family owned and run waste collection and recycling company, is leading the “green revolution” into Cork, by providing a new, innovative and environmentally friendly waste collection service to the householders of Co. Cork.

Cork County Council recently sold its waste collection business following a Waste Management Review which highlighted decreasing customer members and a substantial budget shortfall.

Mr Binman, Repak Recycling Recovery Operator of the Year in 2009 is now expanding its services to more areas in County Cork to offer a cheap, hassle-free household service for Cork householders.

According to Joe Cleary, Sales and Marketing Director of Mr. Binman, they are making it as easy as possible for the former Cork Council customers to move to its new service, “Our ‘Make the Change’ Campaign in Cork has been generating a huge amount of interest. We are switching people over to the new service in under 3 minutes – how could it be any simpler? Either over the phone or online at mrbinman.com, we can set up a new account immediately once we verify the household is on one of our ever expanding collection routes”.

Mr Binman offers a different type of service compared to the previous pay per weight in arrears arrangements put in place by the County Council. This ensures an easy to use service with no headaches of pay per weight arrears and Mr Binman says they are offering savings of up to €100 per annum.

Mr. Cleary said: “We are very much aware of how competitively priced we have to be in the current economic climate but even though we are cheap on price, we are not cheap on service! We value all our customers and the business they give us and we are working every day to make sure our customers are getting an excellent service at an excellent price. We are constantly improving our services to suit our customer’s needs and will continue to do so in the future.”

“We are servicing the glass bottle banks all over County Cork for some time now and people should be familiar with our distinctive yellow and green trucks as a result of this. We have over 60,000 household customers across all areas of Munster including parts of Cork and there has been a tremendous uptake on our service in Cork so we hope that this continues.” Joe Cleary added.

Since its establishment in 1994 Mr Binman has continually expanded routes into the wider Munster region and due to its commitment to waste processing and recycling, Mr Binman ensures that all its customers are winning in the Race Against Waste.

Completion of M9 means Suir Bridge more vital than ever

The opening of the completed M9 is yet another milestone for Waterford and the South East region. The Motorway now links directly from the Suir Bridge Waterford to Dublin. The Suir Bridge is pivotal in providing a regional gateway for the entire southeast.

Declan Cahill, Operations Manager for the Suir Bridge expressed his optimism for the future, “It is our hope that the opening of the final phase of the M9 will play a part in the economic growth and regeneration of the Waterford area and the entire Southeast region, to the benefit of all.”

This new section of motorway provides improved access to and from the city of Waterford via the Suir Bridge and marks the completion of the M9 major inter-urban route connecting Dublin and Waterford. It also impacts on the greater southern and eastern regions. Figures confirmed by the National Roads Authority reveal that significant journey time savings from East Cork, South Tipperary and Waterford to Kilkenny, Carlow and Dublin can be achieved.

A journey from East Cork or West Waterford to Dublin can be signnificantly reduced via the Suir Bridge. Twenty minutes can be saved by using the bridge as an alternative to traversing Waterford City, but now as an integral part of the M9 it combines with the M9’s time savings to Kilkenny, Carlow and Dublin.

According to Mr. Cahill, the success in opening this section marks another significant piece in the national programme of infrastructure development. The enhanced road infrastructure of which the M9 is an important component will improve road safety and shorten journey times. Further critically it will afford both the Waterford and Kilkenny regions opportunities for increased inward investment and assist in attracting foreign investment which is so vital for increased employment and development.

Additionally, the improved road network will aid tourists in accessing a full range of offerings from the Irish hospitality industry throughout the southeast.

This early opening will assist both business and tourism along the entire route for easier access to Kildare, Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford.

Home Instead Senior Care calls for unregulated private home help to be monitored

Friends of the Elderly, an Irish charity which works with seniors to alleviate loneliness and isolation has expressed concern about the numbers of unregulated home help companies in Ireland.

In a recent Irish Times article, Dermot Kirwan of Friends of the Elderly said there has been a proliferation of home help companies and that the influx of private companies offering this service mean the elderly are being put in a “very vulnerable” situation. “My worry is there’s going to be another Leas Cross behind closed doors somewhere” Mr. Kirwan said.

International senior care provider, Home Instead Senior Care, which has a Waterford office also agreed with Mr. Kirwan as to how unregulated home help can be a danger to the elderly.

According to Danette Connolly Director of Care at Home Instead Senior Care, all care providers should be regulated and undergo auditing processes.

“It is frightening when you read some of the senior care statistics in Ireland. In order to administer competent and effective home care all care providers should be fully insured, attend to Garda vetting and the care staff should be trained.”

“Currently Ireland’s home care market is completely unregulated. Seniors are availing of care that is not monitored and some are paying privately for care, leaving themselves vulnerable because taxes are not being paid and there is no insurance cover.”

Ms. Connolly added, “As members of the Irish Private Home Care Association all of our care givers are regularly monitored and undergo Gardai vetting. The carers are our employees and all PAYE & PRSI is paid”

If you or your loved one is in receipt of care you should be seeking verification that the care provider is insured, vetted and tax obligations are being met.

If you are concerned about the care being received by a loved one or suspect an ageing loved one is the victim of abuse, Home Instead Senior Care encourages you to do the following:

Listen to seniors to make sure they are being cared for appropriately.
Report suspected elder abuse to your local HSE office or An Garda Siochana.
Visit ageing loved ones as often as possible so the older person sees you as someone they could trust and talk to about any difficulties they may have. Seniors that are isolated are more likely to be a victim of abuse.

Global research means cheaper kids fashion for Waterford shoppers

ORCHESTRA worldwide has implemented one of the largest surveys ever conducted in retail. Conducted over 12 months the findings have enabled ORCHESTRA Kids Fashion Waterford to build a new strategy which they believe is revolutionary and will change the way traditional retail is practiced.

ORCHESTRA Kids Fashion Waterford is locally owned by Waterford couple Trevor and Maeve Cooke and is aimed at providing Waterford people with unique, quality children’s clothing (0-14) at affordable prices. ORCHESTRA Kids Fashion Waterford is located in a two-story vibrant and colourful shop located on Georges St.

All items reduced by 25% permanently.
The primary result of this extensive research is that ORCHESTRA Kids Fashion Waterford and worldwide has committed to a 25% reduction in all its prices.

Customers do not want to pay full price on one day and see the goods on sale the next.
The major finding of the research was the length of time traditional shops are now spending in sale period. Customers buying habits have changed. They now wait for sale periods to buy the vast bulk of their clothes. ORCHESTRA Kids Fashion Waterford’s solution is to deliver on its promise of design, quality, value, where they give their customers a permanent reduction. They cut their prices permanently by 25% and as such provide a real saving for families.

Cost cutting
The principal reason that ORCHESTRA can afford to reduce costs is economies of scale i.e. buying larger quantities, 2011 orders are double 2010, thus reducing the cost per item. They have also increased their themes twofold. This means the customer will have twice as many ORCHESTRA themes to choose from. ORCHESTRA Waterford will have less units of each piece to sell (one to two pieces of each theme) but twice as many themes.

Commenting on the news, owner Trevor Cooke said "We were delighted when we heard about ORCHESTRA world wide’s decision to reduce all prices by one quarter and couldn’t wait to pass on this to all of our loyal Waterford customers. It has been a tough couple of years for everyone so to be able to commit to a 25% permanent reduction in prices while holding the same quality and even increasing the choice is great for us and also great for the parents of Waterford and the South East.”

For further information call Orchestra’s Waterford store on 051 874130 and ask for Trevor or Maeve.

HCS Business Solutions introduces Mobotix to Laois

Having just launched FSMobile, a unique software application to the UK market, HCS Business Solutions has unveiled yet another pioneering product, Mobotix, a leading Hi-Resolution security camera system.

Recently acclaimed as Mamut Platinum Partners, the accolades on the HCS curriculum vitae keep growing as the Waterford based IT company has been accredited as Advanced Mobotix Partners (AMP). As partners, the HCS team is qualified to provide consultancy and installation services for Mobotix camera solutions.

In a climate where more and more emphasis is placed on security and data gathering, massive advancements have been made in security camera systems. In fact, CCTV or “closed circuit television” is now old technology and cameras all over the world are rapidly being replaced with “Hi-Res” megapixel cameras.

The advantages of Mobotix HiRes camera technology are many fold;

· Cameras record 30 times more detail than CCTV cameras. Often fewer cameras are needed to cover the same area.
· Cameras record the full image all of the time. So even if the camera is zoomed in on a particular area of interest, the entire view is still being recorded.
· Cameras can be managed individually with an internet browser or in multiples with management software which is included at no extra cost.
· Cameras can be accessed remotely easily because they are effectively computers themselves. Access can be quickly setup from home PCs, smartphones, iPhones and PDA’s also.

One such local authority which was immediately able to experience the benefits of the Mobotix system was Laois County Council.

According to Brendan Garry of Laois Water Treatment Plant there was a need to improve his current security system. “It was crucial that we were able to monitor new areas in the facility vulnerable to trespassers and theft. We wanted the capability to read number plates of vehicles entering the facility, the ability to monitor the cameras remotely and also I wanted to be alerted to any unauthorised activity outside of business hours.”

HCS was able to deliver the end product, Mobotix, and once the cameras and software were installed Brendan was impressed with the results. “The detail in the footage is excellent and being able to access it remotely with shortcuts on my iPhone or web browser couldn’t be simpler. By teaming up with HCS the peace of mind that comes with the installation has been invaluable.”

Dan Hegarty, Director with HCS Business Solutions was delighted with the outcome. “The objectives set out by Brendan and Laois Co. Council were clear - improved and expanded security capabilities that could be monitored remotely and in real time.”

“Mobotix gives Brendan the resources to observe the facility as comprehensively as possible and has already led to considerable cost savings.”

As one of Ireland’s leading technology business solutions providers HCS Business Solutions offers proven solutions that are focused on driving productivity and efficiency within the SME and corporate business sectors.

The countdown to the 16th Guinness International Bluegrass Festival is underway!

Press Release – for immediate release
July 9th, 2010

After 15 years of banjo pickin', mandolin' pluckin', step dancin', fiddle playin', double bass clawin' sessions in the picturesque fishing village of Dunmore East – 2010 promises an even more jam packed, foot tappin’, barnstormin’ weekend for the 16th Guinness International Bluegrass Festival.

The countdown has begun to this summer's Guinness International Bluegrass Festival which takes place from August 26th to August 29th.

This is the 16th year in which roots music pilgrims will flock to Co. Waterford for the free, family orientated festival. All of the famous local hostelries will play host to over 50 free gigs throughout the weekend with local, national and international bands playing a variety of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music.

Last years headline stealing main act Jack Grace, aka The Martini Cowboy, will make a welcome return to Dunmore East. Last years performances on stage and on TV3’s Ireland AM reinforced Jack’s position as the King of Bluegrass with his gritty down home country style, with a twist of New York urban.

A band that is looking forward to the Dunmore Bluegrass experience for the first time is Wookalily, an all - female combo that refers to its own style as “Frockabilly woo-grass, putting the blues in bluegrass, the rock in rockabilly and the woo-factor into action.”

Wookalily has been playing together since 2009 and the girls received much acclaim at festivals such as the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, The Ards International Guitar Festival and Belfast’s Open House Festival.

Apart from some of the biggest international names in bluegrass and country appearing at the 16th Guinness Dunmore East International Bluegrass Festival some well known Irish acts will take to the coastal stages, including Knotty Pine, Molly Hicks, Little Ass Birds, Blue Stack Mountain Boys and Bending The Strings amongst others.

Waterford’s very own Southern Welfare will be making their debut at the Guinness Festival this summer. Lovers of bluegrass can expect a selection of authentic bluegrass and gospel from artists like Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs.

Now in its 16th year the Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival has evolved over the years to meet the tastes of roots music fans. Mick Daly, the musical visionary, who founded the festival back in 1995 has seen a lot of genre defying acts take to the free stages of Dunmore East.

“It has been a really exciting journey for all of us involved. We are delighted with this year’s line up, particularly the return of the Martini Cowboy and the debut appearance of Wookalily. Both of these acts have strongly defined blues and bluegrass traits. However over the years we have seen everything from old time country, futuristic newgrass and rhythm and blues – that is the beauty of the festival!”

“The organic growth of the Festival has ensured that it is not only hardened bluegrass fans who can come along and enjoy themselves, but anyone who simply enjoys a good tune is guaranteed to have a great time.”

Bridgestone Guide singles out the Spinnaker Bar and Restaurant

The Spinnaker bar and restaurant in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford is proud to announce that it has been included in the latest Bridgestone Guide, one of the most respected guides to food and accommodation in Ireland.

Located in the picturesque fishing village the Spinnaker Bar has been a fashionable favourite amongst locals and visitors since Niall and Maria Edmondson opened the doors in 2005. The success of the restaurant can be attributed to a number of factors including efficient and friendly staff, a warm and relaxed atmosphere and above all good quality reasonably priced food.

The home page of the Spinnaker’s website states “The Spinnaker Bar - Best for Food, Service and Fun, Family Friendly”. What makes it even more genuine is that two of Ireland’s best regarded gourmands agree with it! And when those two people are John and Sally McKenna of the Bridgestone Guide you know you must be doing something right.

According to The Bridgestone Guide:

“The focus is firmly on food at Niall and Maria Edmondson’s popular Dunmore East bar, and in the peak of the summer it can be hard to get a table here.

Sensibly, the menu sticks to the kind of food you hanker for after a day on the waves: seafood chowder; crab claws in garlic butter; beer battered fish and chips; homemade lamb burger with relish and fries. Quality is high and it’s no wonder the place is such a hit with families.”

Not only has the Bridgestone Guide acknowledged the Spinnaker as an ideal family destination, Good Food Ireland also commended the restaurant.

This is a wonderful accolade for the Spinnaker according to proprietor Niall Edmondson. Speaking to B2B Communications Niall said “Good Food Ireland was founded in November 2006 and operates as a non profit Irish food tourism organisation. It is so important to be partnered with Good Food Ireland because it was founded in order to endorse and promote those committed to local food producers, the farmers, the fishermen and most importantly, for me, the hospitality sector.”

“By being recognised by Good Food Ireland it rubber stamps their approval of the Spinnaker’s dedication and commitment to providing quality fresh and locally sourced produce – the perfect ingredients for any dish.”

The Spinnaker bar boasts a heated beer garden to the rear of the establishment with full bar facilities. It features live music most evenings during the summer season and also caters for private parties and BBQ's.

The Spinnaker provides a regular programme of live entertainment such as regular live music in the main bar and a big screen showing all the main sporting events. There is also The Snug for a peaceful pint or a private party. There is an extensive Off-License, open during pub hours, offering a wide range of wines, beers and spirits at competitive prices.
