NAS Training Centre workshop to help family Carers

The NAS Training Centre has devised the “People Moving” workshop in order to provide family members and carers with practical guidelines and vital information about the moving and handling of people in their care.

The course is for those who look after family members in their own homes and the content focuses on back care, safe moving techniques, including moving people that are being cared for in bed, helping a person get up out of bed/into bed, helping someone walk that requires assistance, and equipment demonstrations.

Danette Connolly, Director of NAS Training said the premise of the course is to ensure that carers have the knowledge and skills to ensure that moving people is done with less effort and the upmost comfort.

“There is a growing number of carers in Ireland.  In fact, between 2004 and 2014 the number of people in receipt of a carer’s allowance has increased from 23,000 to 57,200.”

“The degree of care varies from person to person, however any carer who has to move a family member needs to ensure not only are they doing it correctly, but that they are safeguarding themselves against injury.”

The three hour workshop covers a wide range of techniques such as chair to chair transfers, log rolls, sitting and repositioning, use of equipment such as wheelchairs and transfer boards and hoist demonstrations, the same techniques nurses and carers use.

Taking place each Tuesday afternoon in NAS’s state of the art training facility at Cleaboy Business Park, Waterford booking is essential.

NAS Training Centre introduces Autumn Training Schedule

The NAS Training Centre has launched its Autumn Training prospectus and the schedule offers a diverse range of courses and qualification levels.

The state of the art training facility has gained a reputation as one of the region’s leading training venues and continues to work with strategic partners to host a wide range of academic and practical courses for different sectors and disciplines.

U.C.C. accredited courses due to commence in September include Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies.  The course, created by Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at UCC, the Brothers of Charity, COPE Foundation, Cork Association for Autism and Shine Ireland focuses on the different ways in which people on the autistic spectrum experience the world.

It is designed for those who wish to develop a deeper understanding of the issues affecting the lives of people who experience ASD and examines the historical and social practices that enabled autism to be identified.

Other U.C.C. accredited courses include Higher Diploma in Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, MSc Personal and Management Coaching and Diploma in Learning and Development Practice.

Back for a third term is the Irish Times Training Diploma in Digital Media, in association with the Irish Internet Association. This course is aimed at any business or individual that wants to gain a better understanding of the ever evolving digital landscape and will enable all participants to develop a focused digital marketing strategy.

Over the course of the 12 weeks the modules will include digital marketing strategy, SEO, online advertising, mobile web, social media, online PR and many more.  The trainers comprise of some of the most well regarded names in the digital media industry.

Other Autumn courses include IITD Professional Practice Certificate in Training and Development and Certificate in Trainers Skills.  Darlington Consulting will run a one day course, “Health and Safety Compliance pays” and a Primary Course in Food Hygiene will be conducted by Mary Daly and Associates.

NAS Training Centre to host Chamber Business after Hours

The NAS Training Centre, based in the Cleaboy Business Park, will host a Business after Hours, in association with Waterford Chamber of Commerce, on Thursday, May 1^st.

The state of the art training facility has gained a reputation as one of the region’s leading conference and training venues and May’s open event will give businesses and trainers the opportunity to learn about the facilities and courses on offer.

According to Ray Power, General Manager of NAS Training Centre, the portfolio of courses has grown exponentially since it opened in 2006.  “The NAS Training Centre hosts a wide range of academic and practical courses for different sectors and disciplines.”

NAS develops workshop for those caring for family and friends

The NAS Training Centre has developed a workshop for those caring for family or friends.  The workshops, entitled ‘People Moving Workshop for Family Carers’, will be available in March.  They will provide vital and practical information about how to move people with less effort and how to look after your back.

Back injuries are prevalent in many health service workers, carers and those with the responsibility of moving patients and this prompted the NAS Training Centre to create a workshop that looks at ways of avoiding back injury and making it easier for family carers.  The NAS Training Centre provides training in this area to Nurses and Carers and the content of these workshops is based on the same techniques.

According to Census 2011 there are there are 4,823 family carers in Waterford providing valuable care and support.  It’s very important that these carers have access to the learning skills that will assist them to carry out this role.

Ray Power, Manager of NAS Training Centre said the course is relevant to family carers who have to assist family members stand, walk or move them when they are in bed.  “In many cases carers have to move family members on a regular basis.  This is, more often than not, done without any training.  Appropriate training, advice and practical demonstrations will give participants on the course an understanding of how to look after themselves and avoid injury.”

“The course content is comprehensive and covers areas such as looking after your back, safe moving techniques, chair to chair / bed transfers, and also demonstration of equipment such as sliding sheets and hoists” he added.

The three hour People Moving Workshops take place at the NAS Training Centre, Cleaboy Business Park, Old Kilmeaden Road on March 6^th and March 18^th.

Renowned Irish Times training course returns to the South East

Irish Times Training has once again joined forces with the Irish Internet Association (IIA) to offer a Diploma in Digital Marketing. The course will commence on February 19^th and run over 13 weeks (6pm to 9pm) at the NAS Training Centre in the Cleaboy Business Park, Waterford.

This is the second time the course is scheduled for Waterford.  Last year’s course, which ran from September to December, proved hugely successful.

It is aimed at any organisation, business or individual that wants to gain a better understanding of the ever evolving digital landscape and will enable all participants to develop a focused digital marketing strategy.

Over the course of the 13 weeks the modules will include digital marketing strategy, SEO, online advertising, mobile web, social media, online PR and many more.  The trainers comprise of some of the most well regarded names on the digital media landscape.  Trainers include Eoin Kennedy of Knudger, Maeve Kneasey of Elucidate and Conor Pope of the Irish Times, amongst other experts, who are all industry practitioners, drawing on their collective experience.

UCC Diploma in Disability Studies Coming to NAS Training Centre in Waterford

Following the launch of its Adult Continuing Education (ACE) courses in Waterford last year, UCC is delighted to introduce its Diploma in Disability Studies at the NAS Training Centre.

ACE at University College Cork is the longest established dedicated centre for adult and lifelong learning in the Irish University system.  Over the past several decades ACE has developed a strong tradition of delivering renowned university accredited Continuing Professional Development and Executive Education courses in a wide range of disciplines.

The Diploma in Disability Studies is a two year part time level 7 programme and is designed for those who live, work, care or volunteer in the area of disability.  Disability Studies is a vibrant area of study, developed over the past 40 years by disabled academics. It challenges the way in which disability is understood in our society by developing new research and educational models. These help to remove the physical, legal, political and attitudinal barriers that exclude people from society.

The Diploma in Disability Studies will help students to develop their critical awareness of the factors operating in the world of disability, to become aware of the ways in which different issues overlap and to explore ways of working around these.

ACE Co-ordinator and Waterford native, Ms. Lyndsey El Amoud, who spearheaded the introduction of the UCC accredited courses to Waterford said, “ACE at UCC is delighted to be able to introduce such a practical and informative course to Waterford and the South East.”

The course will be held in the NAS Training Centre, in the Cleaboy Business Park.  Since opening its doors in Waterford in 2006, the NAS Training Centre has earned a reputation for excellence in providing a wide range of training courses and programmes set in a centrally located state of the art facility.

Waterford Hospice appoints new Chairperson

The Waterford Hospice Movement recently appointed Danette Connolly as the new Chairperson of the Board.

Ms. Connolly, who is Director of Care with Home Instead Senior Care Waterford and Director of Training at the NAS Centre, has been a board member since June 2013.  Speaking of the appointment, Danette said “I am delighted to have received the support of the board and intend to continue the hard work of the outgoing Hospice Chair Mr. Pat Gilhooly.”

“25 years ago a group of volunteers got together with the intention of providing palliative care for Waterford’s terminally ill.  As a result of their vision and determination the Waterford Hospice Movement has gone from strength to strength providing hospice care for patients with life threatening illnesses to those in Waterford city, county, South Kilkenny and surrounding areas.”

Danette added, “Back in 1988 there was a total of £2,500 available for services.  We now receive only a third of the required funding from the HSE and annually need to fund raise €400,000.  In addition to this we have committed to raising €6million for the completion of a state of the art 20 bed unit in the grounds of Waterford Regional Hospital.”

Coupled with chairing the Waterford Hospice Board, Danette, a registered nurse has been active in raising awareness about issues pertinent to seniors such as Care Choices for seniors; osteoporosis and fall prevention; Positive Ageing solutions; lobbying for the regulation of care services for the 60,000 seniors throughout Ireland and also founded the Waterford Stroke Support group in 2010.

The new appointment was widely welcomed by the Hospice Board members, including Marie Cummins, Hospice Fundraising co-ordinator.  “I am both, in my capacity as a board member and personally, delighted that Danette has been appointed.  The main focus for the Waterford Hospice Movement is to provide hospice homecare services to those in Waterford and South Kilkenny.”

“Having worked on various projects with Danette over the years I am confident that she can drive the hospice movement assuring the best facilities, care and support services for those with terminal illnesses.”

Danette continued, “Although everyone of the board is committed to the fundraising drive to for the new unit this is in addition to our day to day services.  I’m grateful that we have the support of the public to achieve this goal.”

New Certificate In Autism Spectrum Studies launched by UCC and NAS Training Centre

When it comes to discussing autism, Asperger Syndrome or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the focus often falls on the difficulties encountered by parents sourcing services or appropriate education for their children. Sometimes it is the personal account of a person who is on the autistic spectrum.

The Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies at UCC takes a different approach.  Created by Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at UCC, in a remarkable example of cooperation, the Brothers of Charity, COPE Foundation, Cork Association for Autism and Shine Ireland have shared their expertise with ACE in the development of a programme that focuses on the different ways in which people on the autistic spectrum experience the world.

It is designed for those who wish to develop a deeper understanding of the issues affecting the lives of people who experience ASD and examines the historical and social practices that enabled autism to be identified.

The programme was developed following heavy demand from parents and siblings, teachers and front line workers, health care and other professionals and those who have an interest in the area of autism.

This one year part-time programme, as well as UCC’s two year part-time Diploma in Disability Studies, will be available in the NAS Training Centre in the Cleaboy Business Park from October.

An Open Information Day takes place on Friday, September 20th from 2-7pm in NAS Training Centre, Cleaboy Business Park, Waterford City.

NAS and Solas Centres get heart - wise!

A local company which is the driving force behind the provision of AED and CPR training in the city has teamed up with the Solas Centre, the South East’s cancer support service centre, to provide training in the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillators).

Throughout May NAS Training Centre will deliver a series of free training courses to the Solas Centre on AED instruction and practice along with adult and child CPR.

According to Ray Power, General Manager NAS Training Centre, the importance of AED and CPR skills can never be underestimated.  “In Ireland approximately 10,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease, stroke and other circulatory diseases.  Proficiency and knowledge about what to do if this situation ever arises is paramount.”

 “We offered these informative and practical courses to the volunteers, clients and staff at the Solas Centre in order to allow them to deal competently and capably if ever such a situation arises and also because we greatly admire and respect the work of the Solas Centre.”

Ray added, “The course is designed for those with a duty to respond to an emergency in the workplace environment and the participants will learn by practicing all the steps of AED and CPR under the guidance of a qualified instructor.”

Each year 2,000 people are diagnosed with cancer across Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny.  Since opening its doors at Ardkeen over three years ago, the Solas Centre has provided support services, such as counselling, relaxation therapies and group support services to over 1,000 people affected by cancer and anticipates that the numbers visiting the Centre in 2013 will continue to rise.

Mick Nevin, Manager of the Solas Centre is delighted that the staff and volunteers will undertake such a practical course.  “At the Solas Centre our staff and volunteers receive the highest level of training in all relevant disciplines and we are delighted that NAS invited us to partake on these AED and CPR courses which will give our staff and volunteers the knowledge and skills to deal any cardiac or circulatory emergencies.”

“The philosophy of the Solas Centre is manifold; to provide cancer patients and their families with a safe place to talk things over and to help them cope with living with cancer.  It also will work closely with the hospitals of the region in promoting and supporting patient-focused, cutting-edge cancer research and continues not only to educate people about cancer prevention, but also to change our mindset around cancer,” Mick added.
